Horse racing is the most pointless sport in the world. In fact, it's not really a sport is it as the jockey just sits on the saddle while the horse does all the work.

Pointless sports I can put up with, but seeing three horses killed at the Cheltenham Festival yesterday made me realise it's time to ban this brutal "sport".

Be honest, the whole point of horse racing is so fat middle-aged men can gamble away their life savings. Why do we let horses die for them? Better to saddle up the fatties and bet on which will die of a heart attack first.

If we must insist on betting on racing why do we need horses? They are big creatures and more susceptible to major injury. Why not race pigs or goats?

I can't believe anyone actually thinks horse racing is acceptable in 2012.

I have to agree with you on this, I hate it and everything that goes on in the sport, especially jumping over the stupidly high fences that they get the horses to jump over.

I haven't seen much of it but how did 3 horses actually get killed yesterday?

I'm no fan of Horse racing and the fact that animals are routinely being killed so it can happen is worrying.

they obviously won't ban it, but they need to make it safer for the animals.

I'm not a gambler but have had the odd day at the races which I enjoyed very much.

I differentiate between activities should as dog fighting and fox hunting where the intention is to kill one animal or the other and horse-racing where there is a risk that animals might get injured but nobody sets out to do that, so I have to defend the right to be a twat.
I think that if the criterion for banning horse racing is that occasionally there are casualties, then all animal farming and a bunch of other activities should be banned too and that would have far-reaching consequences for humanity.

I'm not against betting, why don't you bet on something else. Like football, darts or snooker.

I think there are bigger things to worry about than fatalities in horse races.

At least horses aren't torn apart by rabid dogs, or being hunted to extinction for their fur, meat or tusks.

The internet never ceases to amaze me. But for this thread I would never have known that there is a website dedicated to dead horses.

You have to use the horses for something. No point growing them just for glue or French restaurants. Besides, my daughter was at the races today, and will be again on Thursday, and placed a bet on for me, and won me £27. I don't normally bet, and can't stand horseracing, (or cricket). As an aside, if you stopped horseracing, you would be depriving thousands of happy Irishmen from having an early holiday each year, with a weeks betting, and including St Patricks day.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned football. After all, you get broken legs there as well.

Yes I can imagine Bolton's trainer running on the pitch at Newport County and giving Lee a lethal injection.

Sometimes it's fecking impossible to have a serious conversation with some of you twats.

This is a serious issue about replacing horses with pigs, but some of you want to talk about greyhounds and bloody fish!

Agreed - it's stupid.

Every time I try to saddle up a fish it just won't keep still, and even when I manage to get the little f***ers strapped down they always seem to stop breathing before I reach the first fence. It all makes for a crap race when they just lie there gasping.

Shit sport. Should be banned.
