Wanderers’ Under 21s will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways when they face their Burnley counterparts in the last 16 of the Barclays U21 Premier League Cup on Monday evening.
With Chelsea having brought their four match winning streak to an end with a 5-0 victory at Leyland last Monday, the club’s youngsters will be looking to secure a place in the quarter finals of the competition against the Clarets.
Having emerged victorious over Barnsley in a 4-2 thriller last month to progress to this stage of the tournament, the Whites will make the short journey to Turf Moor aiming to end 2013 on a high.
They will come up against a Burnley side however who have enjoyed a steady if not spectacular first half to the season five defeats, eight wins and five draws to their name so far, but they did slip to a 3-1 reverse away at Bradford City in their last league outing earlier this month.
After beginning their route to the last 16 with a penalty shoot-out win over Wigan Athletic back in October, the Clarets have since recorded 2-1 wins over both Crewe Alexandra & Sunderland to set up Monday’s clash with Wanderers.
Prior to last week’s defeat at the hands of the Blues, the youngsters were in fine form in front of goal themselves, notching 16 times in four outings – six of which came from strikers Conor Wilkinson and Zach Clough.
With Wanderers drawing a blank against the Stamford Bridge outfit however, the pair will no doubt be keen to get themselves back on the score sheet and help the Whites secure progression into the last eight and local bragging rights in the process.
For supporters wishing to attend the game, it will be held at Burnley Football Club, Turf Moor, Harry Potts Way, Burnley, Lancashire, BB10 4BX with kick off scheduled for 7pm.
