True wander BUT that still left us with only ONE LB that he felt was ready for the first team. I know Left footed players are rarer than right of course but we should have at least TWO left footed defenders at ALL times. With a squad of twenty five you could argue we should have a minimum of two players for every position with three spares for "utility" men who can play dual roles eg CB or CM. I know we don't have the resources to recruit twenty five real crackers but surely we should have better backup in key positions? We have THREE Keepers and apparently are looking at a fourth. We have god knows how many midfielders yet he's left us with ONE fit striker that's not even OUR player and NO Left Back at all. It's bad planning, funds or lack thereof don't mitigate that mate. I don't belittle the finacial constraints he's under but this situation has existed for months now and yet he had no plan if his first option didn't work. I don't care what anyone says that shows a genuine lack of foresight.wanderlust wrote:But Dougie bought Tierney when Alonso left...luckyPeterpiper wrote:Don't look for him this season mate, that's the last I saw on the club site at any rate. But in my opinion DF should have been looking for another LB the moment Alonso left. I realise hindsight has 20/20 vision but with our squad being so thin anyway he had to know we had no real backup if Tierney got injured. No offence to Ream who isn't a bad defender but in my book he's a CB not a full back. Like Baptiste he gets skinned by a winger with pace. We need a proper Left Back, someon with a bit of pace as well as ability to tackle even if Ream is passed fit to play tomorrow as some reports suggest.wanderlust wrote:The way I heard it, Dougie has been scouring the land for a LB since Tierney got injured but hasn't managed to land one as we have no clout in the market and there aren't that many available.luckyPeterpiper wrote:We won't get dawson mate, wigan are now red hot favourites to land him. I will agree, if we sign dawson
No doubt he'll get slaughtered for it but if they aren't available then there's not much he can do about it.
When's Tierney back?

I agree with the sentiment but Dougie bought Tierney and has been looking for an affordable LB since so I don't think it's fair to suggest that he approached the transfer window incorrectly vis a vis that position.
Looks like he released Cavies to fund a defender but couldn't get one, saw Trotter at a low price who he has apparently researched before and bought him instead.
I think Dougie is one of those who will only buy if he knows what he's buying and then only at the right price which is good - but due to injuries etc, we are still unbalanced.
He could of course dispense with FBs altogether and go 3 at the back in a 352 or similar - which would make some sense given the current squad - but I doubt he'd give up on his beloved 451
I get a feeling he's trying to shoehorn the squad to fit the system.

They will have to be quick. Do the team still travel down by coach to Ipswich on the morning of the game or will they be going down tonight?

That's been his problem since day one wander, he keeps trying to jam square pegs into round holes. The lack of an LB might not be so horrifically apparent if he'd switched to a 4-4-2 using a couple of midfielders to tackle and break up play and ease some of the pressure on the defence, maybe the mids could use a diamond shape with a central sweeper/midfielder at the back, two wide men and an attacking mid in front to support the strikers and provide link up play. We probably have the personnel to make that system work as things are but he refuses to play any system other than 4-5-1 even though it's crystal clear it doesn't work for us.wanderlust wrote:I agree with the sentiment but Dougie bought Tierney and has been looking for an affordable LB since so I don't think it's fair to suggest that he approached the transfer window incorrectly vis a vis that position.

He's as stubborn as Megson, makes even sillier positive can do comments than Coyle and is starting look even more inept than Sammy Lee. I really do think he has to go in the summer, I know you're all for giving him time to rebuild the squad in his own image and I am a big fan of stability myself but this man is taking us backwards in my opinion. He shouldn't go alone though. Phil Gartside should also be dispensed with as it's his almost criminally incompetent management of the club as a whole that has left us in such a dire position. I don't know what Edwin Davies is doing but he really needs to step in personally while there's still a business for him to run.

According to SSN Darcy Blake has been released by Crystal Palace "by mutual consent". He's a defender Dougie signed from Cardiff, do you reckon he might be on his way here?

Cardiff are trying to sign Adam Le Fondre. This might bode well for Mason being released

rammy do we even want Mason? I don't mean to disparage the lad but he didn't do much for me when he was here last time and I certainly wouldn't be keen to pay a million plus for him the way things are. I still think sending Cravies out on loan is a HUGE mistake, we now have THREE strikers playing elsewhere (if you count Sordell which I'm not sure we should). Why have we sent out our last remaining fit striker who actually IS our player? In our position I'd have recalled Tom Eaves as backup to Cravies and swerved the Lutkiewicz deal entirely. I just don't get the "shuffle the strikers" thing that's going on.rammywhite wrote:Cardiff are trying to sign Adam Le Fondre. This might bode well for Mason being released
We're desperate for a left back, that;s what we should be chasing not another under performing striker. Mason might do well in a 4-4-2 but we all know Dougie will NEVER play that formation so what's the point of buying him? he's useless as a lone front man. He needs another striker to support him or to play the ball too and he won't get that here.

Doesn't make good reading, does it.....?Boggersbelief wrote:Dawson off to Wigan. Mason rejected us. Mcnaughton staying with Cardiff.
So, as I see it, in terms of the first team, we have:
Sold Ngog.
Loaned C Davies out.
Jutkewotsit's in, as in Trotter.
So in nett terms, we're -1 striker and +1 Midfielder.
No new defenders in.
I can't see any last minute business being conducted, so I think we're stuck with things as they are.
I am not inspired......

You're probably correct - but we're so short of strikers that if this lad is any good at all, then I'd rather have him than not.
But I'd rather give Eaves a chance

Boggers you want some news that might lighten our mood a bit? Apparently Darcy Blake has been released by Palace and he's not a bad left back at this level. Dougie signed him from cardiff for palace but he never got a real chance under holloway and fell down the pecking order. Maybe he could be on his way here? As he's now a free agent the deadline doesn't apply so it doesn't have to be done tonight if he is. I know it's speculative on my part but dougie is keen on players he signed before.Breadman wrote:Doesn't make good reading, does it.....?Boggersbelief wrote:Dawson off to Wigan. Mason rejected us.
