Pea and Ham soup is great but it takes ages to do properly - at least 8 hours if you slow cook it although you could speed it up by using a pressure cooker if you're that way inclined.
I use a ham bone with as much meat on as poss but you can use ham hocks or even chopped up ham - but the bone definitely adds to the flavour.
My mum used to make it with a few carrots and celery sticks in, parsley, bay leaf and onion in with the split peas from the off but I like to add plenty of garlic and use fine pepper instead of the usual cracked black pepper from the grinder.
Not sure about the dumplings Bread - it's already a carb-fest. Real tasty comfort food though.
