Your ten-point guide to Wanderers' latest permanent signing
1. Max James Clayton was born in Crewe on August 9 1994.
2. The 20-year-old has represented England at U16, U17, U18 and U19 level.
3. Starting his career with hometown club Crewe Alexandra, Clayton made his debut for the Alex shortly after his 18th birthday in a 2–1 league win against Morecambe at the Alexandra Stadium on April 22 2011. At the time he became the club’s second youngest ever player.
4. He is not the first member of his family to have played upfront for Crewe. Father Paul started his career with Norwich City and later went on to enjoy a two-year spell with the Railwaymen between 1989-1991.
5. His netted first professional goal on his full Crewe debut, against Macclesfield Town in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie on October 5 2011.
6. A maiden league goal soon followed in the most dramatic of circumstances as Clayton scored a 94th minute winner against Morecambe on November 19 2011.
7. Clayton scored a vital goal in the League Two play-off semi-finals, coming off the bench in the second leg to score late on in Crewe’s 3-2 aggregate win against Southend United, helping to book his side’s place at Wembley for the final.
8. The young forward came on as a substitute for the last ten minutes of the 2012 League Two Play-Off Final, as Crewe beat Cheltenham Town 2-0 to secure promotion.
9. He replicated his scoring feats against Southend the following season, scoring Crewe’s second goal in their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final victory at Wembley.
10. Wanderers fought off competition from a number of clubs to land Clayton’s signature, with the striker even having spent time on trial at Premier League Sunderland during the summer, starting the club’s 5-1 friendly win over Darlington.
