No, not down at the rubbish dump  (sorry.....waste recycling centre),   but the sort of tipping that seems to be a seasonal expectation at this time of year.

What's the general consensus? I'm never sure. Do we tip the postman (or woman), the dustman, the barber etc?

And how much is considered the right amount to avoid the contents of the bin being scattered over the driveway, mail being spat on, and hair butchered to the point where it's uncomfortable to be seen in public for a few weeks?

On the other hand, no one wants to be exploited or tacitly blackmailed........

Sounds like an American thing to me, I've never heard of anybody tipping the dustman or postman, and I've only ever dropped a bit of spare change in for a barber.

I never tip the bin men. As a lad I used to see them humping heavy metal bins about, bringing them from the back of the house to the lorry, then taking them back. In Warrington now,you have to take your own bin out, making sure the handle is pointing into the road, and woe betide anyone who allows their bin lid to stick up a couple of inches. They simply won't empty it. Nor will they remove refuse sacks left by the side of the bin. If they happen too spill anything they simply leave it. They can whistle for a tip.
I always give the postie a tenner at Christmas.
I don't tip the bus driver,so why should I tip a taxi driver? They're mostly miserable sods anyway,so they get nowt either.
So it's just the postie for me.

I used to always tip the Postie and the bin men but haven't done it for a few years, if I'm honest.

Can't remember why I stopped.

The window cleaner brought all three of our bins in yesterday and I have only just now realised why.

Ha! Good try, mate, but no cigar!

I get such a lot of mail I feel duty bound to give the postie a tip.

We always tip our milkman. He got his £5 Xmas tip earlier on today when he came to collect his milk bill.

I'm amazed, maybe it's a Northern thing.

Been in TGI's a couple of times and the waitress folded the receipt to hide the total amount and wrote "thank you have a lovely evening x", why don't they give service with a smile and not expect a tip?

Isnt that the while point seeing that they get paid for waitressing?

I give the girl who shoves the free paper through the door in all weathers a few quid if I see her.

No way would I ever tip a postman - those thieving bastards remove all the "tips" they want from people's birthday cards and stuff. Robbing twats.

Restaurants are about the only place I think tipping should be expected.

Tipping shouldn't be expected anywhere.

I tip my postman because he rides the lift to the penthouse to drop off my post when he could just leave it in reception. And that's the point, if someone goes out of their way to help you then you should tip - but tipping people to do their job i.e. a waitress or taxi driver just encourages lazy standards.
