I still can't see what the problem is. If he is cheap and we sign him to the end of the season what harm does it do. Just to remind folks on here that he was a our best player three seasons ago or so. And if it doesn't work out then so what. It's a warm body with Prem experience in my mind and some skill to boot.
Chris Eagles - Worth a punt?

I'd take him, but I guess he'll want a decent wage which we won't want to pay, the reason he went I the first place.

He had a good half season before Coyle got sacked, that's half a season in 3 years, never was he our best player.
What's the point in signing him really? He was never fit for Blackpool, so by the time he gets fit here we'll probably have Lee and Clough back. We also have Kellet now too.
Not quick or fit enough to make a consistent impact in this league.

One season he was our best player, I forget which, but he was leading scorer and top of the assists chart. In that form of course he would be a good signing.
But he's hardly played for 12 months so not worth any risk.

Freedman put a lot of faith in Eagles at the beginning and he was one player who was given the opportunity to express himself in a role not dissimilar to the one CYL was given recently. Either the other forwards didn't understand what he was doing or there was simply no movement for him but it invariably ended up with Eagles running into one dead end after another and there was no end product.
Eagles is way too expensive for the limited amount he actually delivers plus he's disruptive which is why Freedman lost patience with him and why I wouldn't have him back if he paid us.

He's been released by Charlton (along with Tal Ben Haim).
He's still only 29.
His career is heading nowhere at the moment.
Worth a punt to rescue him perhaps?
What do people think about him now?

Have to be cheap as chips to make sure it balances out the games he goes missing. Could get 10 - 15 goals a season though

Tinned Toms - You know it makes sense!
I wouldn't bother. He doesn't put the ball effort in in case he messes his hair up, he's a big girl.

Would have been interesting to see him work under Lennon. I'm guessing it would have been a similar outcome to that under Freedman though.
Look for some fresh talent to bring up the Lennon way… grafting for a place in the squad, not arrogant enough to simply expect it.

Not for me. We couldn't afford him.Sluffy wrote:He's been released by Charlton (along with Tal Ben Haim).

Also why stop there. Why not get Tal Ben Haim in and maybe Kevin Nolan when he's released.
Ladies and Gents we just can't afford these players anymore. Eagles doesn't get offers because his salary is too high. Unlike Gudjohnson and Heskey are playing for fun

I think if he's cheap enough in wages terms he's worth the punt. On his day he's a brilliant left sided player and we sorely need someone with pace and ability on the wings, especially when you consider we have Emile Heskey up front. With a more attack minded manager playing a more positive system than DF did I think Eagles would be happier and therefore more consistent. It's definitely worth taking some time to consider at the very least. If he's got no deal elsewhere then perhaps Neil could even offer him a trial or pay as you play.

No mate, he was pretty quick when he was on form although I'd be the first to admit we didn't see enough of it consistently.
I guess my belief is that Eagles has the talent but as yet no manager has brought it out of him consistently enough. I think Neil really could do that and if Eagles is on a reasonable wage he could turn out to be a genius signing.
