No mate, you're not thick at all. I had an English teacher who loved that word and it's been stuck in my head for about forty years. I guess I've become pretty sanguine about that fact over time.

I think (with the greatest respect to LPP who I'm fairly sure is younger then me) that it is an age thing.

I think it is in two ways too.

Firstly we've been around much longer than you youngsters so we've had more chance to stumble accross such words over the years.  Secondly and I think more relevantly, is that words tend to go in and out of fashion and others are born or take new meanings.

Forty and fifty years ago the world was a different place and we read books and newspapers, these days it is all about texts, tweets and emails, etc, so people tend to use shorter words, or new ones, or simply keep to a shorter vocabulary.

It is of course a two way street in that my daughter often uses words that I've never heard before (or in a different meaning if I had) yet are obviously in common parlance within her/your generation.

I'm old enough to remember that only birds used to 'twitter' and that you were happy if you felt 'gay'!

I think it is entirely reasonable that out of contract players who have consistently failed to perform or remain free from injury be let go. This is a business and has to be considered as such. High wages and no satisfactory level of return must surely mean the end of the arrangement. I am surprised at the suggestion that Lonergan is leaving though, having been relatively consistent when called upon. Fitzsimons is not ready to step up to the first team in my opinion - having never seen him play - so there must be encouraging signs regarding Ben Amos for that to be the case. The Premiership wages that some players have been enjoying cannot continue either. It will make interesting reading next week, that's for sure - but I eagerly await our new arrivals and look forward to a much stronger challenge from the Whites next season.

I agree sluffy. I think the language has by and large been butchered in this multi-media world where entire sentences are reduced to abbreviations. 

There's always some difference in the meanings of individual words from one generation to the next of course but in the last twenty years or so this has become much more pronounced, largely due to the advent of mobile phones and text messaging. 

Add in the effects of social media such as twitter and facebook and anyone over thirty five (including myself) could be forgiven for wondering if his children are speaking English at all. I don't personally object to my kids using some of the current slang etc but I'm not a fan of the 'shorthand' text that I believe is bad for their basic literacy. I may be old-fashioned but I really do believe good grammar and proper spelling are essential for efficient communication, especially in written form whether it's typed on a screen or written with a pen.

Guidetti could happen, his stock is rock bottom after a hit and miss few seasons. I'd be surprised if an Eredevisie side didn't have a go though.
