Does it make any difference if they're active, dead or dormant accounts?
If not, you might as well leave them in case they get involved at some future date.
If you really must cull - and I can't see a compelling reason why you should - try sending them an email asking them if they want to keep the account first.
Any undeliverables plus anyone who says they want out could then be safely culled.
What is the point in just collecting names?
Everyone of those listed above have never made any post on here and its been about six months since any of them last visited here - many of them not bothering with us for a year or more.
Wrong question Sluffy. It should be "What's the point of culling them?"
It can't do any harm leaving them there and if one or two come back (unlikely as it seems) it could actually do some good.
But if you cull them you'll be burning your bridges by removing the chance of them logging on again. Why?
A bulk "last chance" email would be easy and efficient as well as strategically correct. Assume it's easy enough to bulk mail off the database?
You can always do it on an opt-in basis...
Personally I'd just let it lie.
Thanks for your advice Lusty, it really is appreciated.
If I was considering deleting a customer data base in real life - then I simply would not do it but here on the internet logical business rules simply do not apply.
For instance who is the customer? Are these people who we are putting up for deletion even real people? What I mean is that the people behind these accounts may be members on here now under subsequent accounts - they may have been accounts that people could not remember their user name and or password and simply re-registered again under a different name.
Even if they are real people, the fact that they once registered showed that they 'know' about our existence - and the fact that all of them haven't visited us in over 6 months - some not being on here for over two years - shows that they chose not to be part of Nuts along with the rest of us.
Even if they did want to visit us again one day in the future, it takes but a few seconds to re-register again (using exactly the same user name, password and email address if they wished) - so there is no barrier of access whatsoever to Nuts.
In effect all we are doing is having a bit of fun with long forgotten accounts of people who have no wish to be a member of here any more.
Will Nuts be any worse off by deleting accounts of those who have not chosen to use them since before the start of this current season?
I doubt it.
Nuts is a forum of news and fun (that's our aim anyway), so if someone has registered with us and dosen't visit us anymore and as NEVER posted - then what's the point in counting them as a member any longer?
Other sites may consider their virility as to the number of members they have but we rather have people posting instead and not give a toss if we have just a fraction of their members.
To paraphrase the old saying - forum members should be heard (postings) and not seen (number of members) - not the other way about!
