Their policy is to reduce the armed forces over a long period of time to a level suitable for defence of the country. We have the 5th strongest army in the world at this point, for a country our size with the allies we have that's ridiculous and if we weren't getting involved in foreign wars it would be near obsolete. It should  definitely be reduced, who exactly is about to invade us?

A totally scary post. Hang your head in shame. The fact no one invades us is the fact we are well defended.
I can assure you, the UK is no longer a major world player as far as the armed forces go.

And why should we be? Russia, China, America are the superpowers too many retain this completely false illusion that we're a big player when we're not.

Because we should.

For hundreds of years Britain has been a nation hated by many, countries that nobody hates dont need an armed force, we are not one of these.

Totally clueless. When countries need something doing on the quiet and professionally who do you think they call? The British SAS.

Sounds to me like you see it more of an issue of national pride?

We have been invaded so many times is anyone even bothered anymore? If UKIP are to be believed, we are being invaded right now - despite our disproportionately large army.

Anyhoo, 90% of our forces are on the other side of the world protecting America's "legitimate business interests" so they'd be as much use as a chocolate fireguard if the UK was attacked.

Totally clueless. You could keep the SAS and still massively reduce spending on the army.

You idiot. The MOD can barely afford to give our troops protective gear, how could they spend any less?

We have been told by experts to pump our army up, who ever is in charge.

We are never going to be suddenly invaded, nor are we suddenly going to be nuked - things escalate over time. The forces would be back were we needed them.

The one interest we may have to protect in the future, even if the Russians decide to give up on re-forming the Soviet Union, Oil is running out. There could be oil off the coast of Cyprus... we will have a big finger in that pie should it turn out their is... other countries may decide they want a bit of it as well... so the bigger the army, the easier it is to protect our interests should we need to.

Its the way the world works unfortunately and always will.

Lusty, tell me this... what would you do if the tide suddenly turned, our military hardware consisted of 2 tanks, a helicopter with 2 air rifles tied on to it and 6 rubber dinghy's off Ebay. we suddenly found the need to defend ourselves... would you complain then that we should have had a bigger and better armed force?

Or are you a Hippy type who follows some deluded ideology that one day there will be peace and everything can be settled over a cup of tea?

Id love world peace, unfortunately, we are never going to get it, the human species has not evolved to that level yet.

Before we are even halfway there, religion needs to be eradicated and EVERY country on earth needs to destroy its Nuclear weapons collectively.

Why should we have any claim to oil in Cyprus? The airforce base there? It's attitudes like yours that cause wars.
