The ones that stick in my mind are mostly record shops. Tracks on Mealhouse Lane, Derek Guests on Knowlsley Street, the name escapes me of the place upstairs in Edwin P Lees(?) on the corner of Newport Street (I think), and there was also a toy shop nearby that I got most of my Start Wars figures from as a kid.
Beyond that all I can really remember was a clothes shop at the top of Bank Street where I used to buy Matinique t-shirts. Thought I looked great in them but in reality I probably just looked like the shit one from Bros. And, a nice little book shop on Deansgate opposite Whittakers(?) or some other department store.
Talibs and A&A Fashions on Blackburn Road for jeans like everyone else.
Wow this took me back and reminded me of how much my memory has faded and yet also how good it is on a couple of locations.

I remember Len Tobutts when it was in the row of shops on the ASDA side of Blackburn Road. Think it moved almost directly across the street at some point. Used to get my footy boots there.karlypants wrote:

Tracks: Squeeze - Cool for Cats
Derek Guests: The Cure - Let's Go to Bed
Edwin P Lees upstairs shop: something by the Adicts (bought purely based on the sleeve as I hadn't heard their music beforehand)

Hanburys - There was one at bottom of our street when I was little. It's changed it's name about five times since but it's still "Hanburys" to us.
Ken Leggs - Fruit and veg shop on Church Road.
Molly Benthams - pie shop on Church Road. To me it's always been Hunters but most people round here still call it Molly Benthams.
Barrets - Fruit and veg shop, one on Halliwell Road, one on Chorley Old.
Woolworths - No wonder it's no longer with us. Utter shite.
Donnay Shop - before it turned into Sports Soccer/World/Direct
I'll be really impressed if anybody can remember the name of a bakery/pie shop on Knowsley Road. No idea what it was called, just remember that there used to be one.

Hanburys, haircuts by Squire Foster on Egerton street Farnworth, he only knew one style of haircuts, but he had playboy magazines in his shop= winner for us kids.
Togs cafe on Market street Farnworth, Salters sports more or less next door, then there was Tinklers grocers on Buckley lane, my brother used to nick the cole bottles from out back, then take them back for a penny per bottle.

Geralds barbers in Tonge Fold. He was an old Italian guy, as a kid couldn't understand what he was saying and his hands were a bit shakey ( never had a straight fringe for the first 12 years of mylife).

Anybody remember the chippy that used to be on Church Rd on the other side from the Post Office and a bit further up?

Tinned Toms - You know it makes sense!
A lot of memories in this thread. I remember going in xrecords and andys records but I bought my first cd from our price which was where the 3 store is in town I think.
Also, on the weekends my dad would take me to the mermaid chippy on halliwell road and then next door to rent some videos from videovision.

Scholes and Scholes in Nelson square. Used to be full of fashionable but expensive clothes. All I could ever do was look through the window as I could never have afforded the prices they charged.
Also Percivals in the Market Hall used to have brilliant cheese and onion pies
