I used to deliver papers for Gulshan's paper shop on Bennetts Lane when it was owned by the ugliest family in the world.

Toffees came from The Candy Box on Ivy Road (can't remember what it was called before that) and haircuts were supplied by Neville of the imaginatively named Neville's on Church Rd.

(Not a full shilling, looked like Gomez Adams and was a bit odd but he got me into Road Racing on my bike as a teen and I thank him for that.)

And all family special occasion meals were split between The Coaching House and The Lamplighter.

Happy, happy days......

Was Gulshan's the newsagents opposite the chemist?

Only asking as my gran used to live (and I did for a while) in Arnold Street with the chippy at the corner (and its still there) and there used to be a bakers next to it and then a small greengrocers!!

Has anyone mention Rumbelows, yet (not checked pages 2 and 3 yes)?

Or what about Edwin P Lees on corner of Great Moor Street and Newport Street (now demolished to be replaced with a £50million bus station which is 1/3 smaller than the bus station on Blackhorse Street)

Know it quite well - short cut to the docs on Halliwell Road (where Dr James worked before he retired and unfortunately died, plus short cut to a play-school near there  and there used to be an arts shop at top of Valletts Lane

Just across the road from the Spinners for me.

Used to catch the bus into town from the bus stop there, although back in those days I always used to walk unless I was really late.

Tates at the top of Greenmount Lane, at junction with Markland Hill Road, particularly beloved of those taught by Mrs Tate

lived in and around Halliwell a lot as a kid, Weymouth St (gone now but was the road going down from the Lamb pub), Broughton St and Tennis St near the industrial estate and Bennetts Lane. Used to play football on Holy Harbour as our school owned it i think? (St Thomas on Eskrick St) and went to watch Bolton ST play there. I remember a massive crowd when Roy Greaves played there  Very Happy.

My Gran lived on Wynne St then in the sheltered flats on Tennyson St. Halliwell was great then not so sure now from what i hear.
