Asda started selling one recently called 19 crimes which is an Australian red. Even people I've offered some to that aren't normally red wine drinkers say it's absolutely gorgeous. You can get a bottle of that for about £6.

When it comes to white, anything that's a Marlborough NZ Sauvignon Blanc is generally top wine. They all taste very similar as they have a distinctive sour taste. Usually they're at least £6, so they're not the cheapest but definitely worth it.

If you like rose wine, the best place to go is Lidl as they actually do a few in the £3-£4 region that are really nice.

Wolfblass Yellow Label is another good day to day bottle so to speak although that is the Chardonnay priced around £7 which you have stated you don't like, although they do have a Red Label range where they have a Chardonnay Semillon priced around £5 which I find nice and maybe worth taking a chance on?

I really don't understand why so many people swear by Wolf Blass, every Wolf Blass I've had has tasted like a cheaper version of something I've paid less for before.

I just think it's crap.

The Sainsburys Taste the Difference range is pretty reliable and reasonably priced.

If you like dry whites I would suggest Sauvignon Blanc or Albarino and for full bodied reds try Shiraz, Cabernet, Merlot and Malbec.

Broadly you do get what you pay for but I think the sweet spot for value for money is between £7 and £10.

Toro Loco Tempranillo from Aldi for the red option.

Check out the reviews in that link, Mand.

And you can't beat Brancott Estate Sauvignon Blanc for the white.

(It's what used to be Marlborough Montana.)

For nice rich bold red there is nothing better, which I can find, than Yellow Tail Big Bold Red.  It is a mixed grape red wine but very tasty.

I only know of two places that sell it - Tesco and Bargain Booze (2 bottles for £12)

I've just fixed your image problem again.

It was doing my nut in! Very Happy

I almost forgot about Yellow Tail. We do drink their Sauvignon Blanc as well which is usually priced around £6 but on offer quite often. Smile

Get Manda sorted. That sad little dog is depressing.

In that price range I'd go for South African Pinotages, Argentinian Malbecs and the better Chilean Merlots if you're buying in a supermarket.
Presumably you're a Sauvignon Blanc girl so I'd recommend NZ - although there are some nice Aussie ones too.

Another option in that price range is to sign up to a wine club (e.g. Virgin or Times) and they'll send you a dozen "interesting" bottles every month. We use Virgin ATM and you can specify e.g. ABC or "just reds" but the rest is a bit of a lottery although the quality is nearly always good. Clubs also offer discounts and special offers so worth checking out.

thanks wandy, I'll look into wine clubs, is it like football, the first one you join, its yours for life? You are right, I am a sauvignon blanc girl and am also partial to a Pinot Grigio, or a cheeky Chablis when funds permit. I shall be partaking this eve, whilst on portal, all in the name of research you understand.

Well, it'll cost you a fortune and whilst there will be a certain amount of pleasure involved, you will also find yourself with a sour taste in your mouth every so often, so yes.
