It has been announced today that bereaved families have blocked the donation of organs from 547 UK registered donors since 2010 - about one in seven cases.

This is fucking disgusting.

547 people have died expecting their organs to go to other people, only to have their wishes overruled by selfish family members. I am a Christian but even I know only the soul lives on, the body and its organs are going to do nothing but rot away.

I'd like 5 minutes in a small room with each and every one of these 547 selfish twats. I really hate these people. Nothing can defend what they have done. Hopefully these people will one day find themselves needing a kidney, lung etc and won't be able to get one through the selfishness of some other twat.

When are we going to be brave and make it compulsory for ALL organs to be donated?

Ridiculous society we live in where the dead are treated better than the living.

I agree it should be compulsory, it's just good recycling.

Get on with setting up a petition so we can get MPs debating it.

I'm donating everything,including my,skeleton. It's no good to me when I'm dead.

The Human Tissue Authority is the place to look,if you're interested.

I wonder why they did it?

They probably thought that they'd hurt the dead person or something.

A range of excuses from "he didn't know what he was doing when he signed the register" to "if he's missing bits he'll be disabled in heaven".

Twats!

Pointless. A better way to highlight the issue would be to become a serial killer and start removing organs from random people.

i have a donor card still and Mrs Pig is fully aware of my views if and when i visit the great abattoir in the sky. I agree it should be made compulsory unless you opt out.

The merciful religions have a lot to be blamed for, from "You can't go to heaven if you're not whole" to "I can't do that to my hubby, brother/sister/other close relative" or "I'm a Jehova's Witness, not allowed." For once, Tash has put up summat that should be written in law.

There shouldn't even be an option to opt out, why should a dead person care what happens to his or her bits?

Maybe they should be allowed clauses like not giving them to fat people/rapists/Blackburn fans, but that's as far as it should go.

MPs are more interested in our National Anthem than getting involved with trivia like this.

I agree with Nat, however, when the family members are asked, they could still be in shock, or deeply grieved, and still thinking of their loved one in the present tense. That feeling wont disappear overnight either. Having a relative, who you were probably talking to yesterday, carved up and distributed amongst others, isn't easy for a lot of people, no matter how altruistic you try to be.

Organ donation is now compulsory in Wales, and it will be interesting to see how it works out.

It's ridiculous that we haven't got the same law as they have in Wales. It would be nice if these arseholes who are over-riding their deceased relative's wishes could be told that they are not eligible for receiving donations, including blood, from other people.
