Jay Spearing promised fans Wanderers will move heaven and earth to secure the two wins which guarantee promotion.

Defeat at Scunthorpe was cancelled out by Fleetwood’s hiccup at Oldham on Saturday, meaning Phil Parkinson’s side will be celebrating a return to the Championship if they beat two local rivals in the next eight days.

The Whites could go up this weekend if they win at Boundary Park and both Fleetwood and Bradford lose their respective games, both played 24 hours earlier on Good Friday.

Back-to-back victories against Oldham and Bury - who come to the Macron next Tuesday night – would allow the celebrations to begin, regardless of what happens elsewhere.

David Mirfin’s header consigned Wanderers to their first loss in 10 games at Scunthorpe but 2,200 travelling supporters continued singing long after the final whistle thanks to Fleetwood’s result.

And Spearing assured them the team would pick themselves up quickly following a rare aberration.

“The fans are the ones who are keeping us going at the moment – it’s like having an extra player on the pitch sometimes,” he told The Bolton News. “With 10 minutes to go we’re 1-0 down and they were singing their hearts out. All we can do it thank them for travelling and I know it’ll be another massive support next week.

“We’ve got to try and get ourselves over the line and they are helping us do it. This club has got a tremendous following, seeing 23,000 at home the other week was incredible. We want this just as much as the fans do, I promise them that.”

Spearing admitted the midweek win at Southend United may have taken the edge off the Whites’ performance. But with a full week to prepare for Oldham, the midfielder is confident there will be no hangover from the Scunthorpe defeat.

“It’s been tough – that’s no excuse for the defeat but we’ve been up and down the country all week, in hotels. Maybe our legs were a bit weary at times,” he said. “I thought we got better as the game wore on and we could have come away with something. The lads can see the prize at the end. The fight, the hunger and the desire is all there.”
