Ian Evatt has no doubt that Dennis Politic will come back stronger from his season-ending injury.
The 20-year-old winger is still not scheduled to return until next summer but has made encouraging progress from a knee operation carried out last month to repair torn ligaments.
Politic suffered the injury in a pre-season friendly at Loughborough and has now been told by specialist that he can push on to the next stage of his rehabilitation.
Evatt gave an update on Politic’s condition in the build-up to this afternoon’s League Two game at Leyton Orient.
“He’s been to see the specialist, who is really happy with where he’s at,” Evatt told The Bolton News. “Dennis is off his crutches and progressing with his range of movement.
“He is a really hard worker as well, a fantastic professional. For a young player he lives and breathes football and looks after his body 24 hours, seven days a week, which is vital.
“He will be back bigger, better and stronger, I have no doubts about that.”
When Politic sustained the injury, Evatt was quick to underline that he would place no pressure on the youngster to return during the regular season.
He maintains that view despite the progress that has been made in the last few weeks.
“In my own head, it’s the season,” he said. “But that’s only because it is what is best for Dennis.
“I don’t want to rush him back and then him have a setback. Next season he will be a big player for this club, going forwards, and we have to make sure he is properly looked after.”
Evatt also had some words of praise for another one of Wanderers’ youngsters, Ronan Darcy, whose late cameo in the victory against Bradford City on Tuesday night has set tongues wagging among the Bolton fans.
Darcy was on the pitch for a little over four minutes but during that time he had a chance to shoot from 40 yards out after collecting a shanked free-kick from Bradford keeper Richard O’Donnell, and then another chance to set a counter attack away with a pass to Ali Crawford.
On both occasions he opted to play it safe, heading for the corners to eat up some valuable seconds in injury time.
Darcy also picked up a booking for preventing Bradford taking a quick free-kick.
Though opinion was split among the watching fans on whether he had done the right thing, Ian Evatt was unequivocal in his support.
“Even though it was a short cameo for Ronan the maturity he showed for such a young player, the decision making, taking it to the corner when it wasn’t on to run towards goal, cross it or pass it, was excellent,” he said.
“I was really pleased for him.
“And especially in his position because he’s trying really hard to get into my team and it would have been easy for him to think ‘if I go and score, or shoot from 25 yards then it’ll be easier to get in’ but he sacrificed that thought to make sure he did what he thought was right for the team.
“I’ve told him that and it was great to see that sort of unselfishness.”
