Yes I know, it's in the wrong country at the wrong time of year, but let's try and muster a bit of enthusiasm for the competition.

So what would be your starting 11 against Iran in England's opening game?

I'd go with:

Pickford

Trippier - Stones - Coady - Shaw

Saka - Maddison - Rice - Bellingham - Foden

Kane

Admittedly the defence is bobbins (except Trippier) but we're not exactly blessed in that department.

Attacking wise we really should be rolling over anyone but the top teams.

Sadly, I fear that team is too offensive for Southgate who will be desperate to fit two holding midfielders into his team - I fully expect Kalvin Phillips to start if he's declared fit, even though he hasn't kicked a ball in months.

Southgate & Evans out.

We shouldn't be there. I won't be watching or commenting. Enjoy.

Of course we shouldn't, talk about stating the bleeding obvious.

But a country can't pull out without major sanctions that would impact all clubs in that country, hence we are where we are.

I will watch it, and enjoy it until the inevitable last gasp defeat.

I've never done anything for fear of the consequences. It's got me sacked twice, but there we are.

I can't believe you're comparing the World Cup to the time you declared it 'go to work naked day'.

No gaurentee Maddison makes the squad ? but yes he's in form think Mount gets the nod.  Don't think your far away Nat but here's a a controversial one, I still can't see what all the fuss is about Foden in an England shirt.

I definitely agree with that, he's done nothing in an England shirt but looks a world beater for City. Not sure who else we have in an attacking left wing position, Harvey Barnes is in great form though.

Just read that an Argentinian referee has just sent off TEN players in a match between Boca Juniors and Racing!
He's officiating in the forthcoming World Cup.....could be interesting!

Not just me then, he will start but he always under performs hopefully he will turn up and prove me wrong, i hope so. Need to see the squad see if Barnes figures.

Gone from thinking we had a real shout after the Euros, to looking shocking in that last comp. Hopefully Southgate knows what he's doing.

I don't think he'll pick Barnes for one minute, he'll go for the "trusted" names like Stirling, Mount etc.

Defence is our big weakness, hence why I think Southgate will opt for the usual Phillips & Rice defensive midfield partnership. Not sure you can win a World Cup playing defensively.

Blaster now says it was a mistake to give the WC to Quatar as it should have gone to the USA. This is after he and Platini probably received their brown envelopes?

Spot on Nat, glad Maddison made it, i like Gallagher but lots to prove, i don't like including injured players but it's not new, surprised to see Rashford in, I like Toney but again unproven at this level. At this point you have to trust the manager can replicate the last two comps prior to this summers debacle.

I'll be supporting them, but I can't help feel a better manager would get more out of these players. But Southgate does come across as a decent and honourable bloke.

I do agree with you, but equally I don't think there's an outstanding replacement right now.

Very true, but I might be convinced if the money's right.

Defense looks weak to me, we don't have any decent CB's at the moment and if Maguire is the best we have then we really are struggling. I don't understand why he is taking half fit players like Walker and Phillips either.

Bloody Maguire, Mount, Sterling all starting against Iran despite no form this season whatsoever.

Southgate out.

Decent result, looked good going forward at times, but against decent opposition that defence is going to struggle.

Maguire was brilliant when attacking the ball from corners, but his job is to defend and the one time he was needed the striker was too quick for him and slammed the ball home. Sterling was Sterling, scored a good goal but too often he got in good positions and couldn't control the ball. I think Jermaine Jenas summed Sterling up perfectly when he said he's better when he doesn't have to think about it. As for Mount, anonymous is all I can say. Jack Grealish would be much better playing that role, or Maddison when fit.

But I'm not one for negativity. Kane was outstanding again, the best passer of a ball in English football. Bellingham is going to be a world beater, and Shaw was excellent up that left wing.
