Did anyone watch the first episode of 'The Missing' on BBC 1?
Meant to watch it but didn't. Does it look worth following?

Tinned Toms - You know it makes sense!
I've watched the first two episodes now and although not a great programme it is worth watching imo. The formatting is a little strange as it jumps back and forth from around the time it happens to the present day and as a result you know the child is gone for at least 8 years. That is not a spoiler btw as it's made clear in the first episode. It is, on the other hand quite intriguing as you want to know how things have turned the way they have 8 years on. James Nesbitt is a good actor and plays the role well. Hope this helps.boltonbonce wrote:Did anyone watch the first episode of 'The Missing' on BBC 1?

It sounds a bit like The Killing which was brilliant imo. Can't wait for season 2.

Sagan used to get my astronomical juices going. He was one of those natural communicators that seem to have all but disappeared from our screens these days.
Men like Patrick Moore,Magnus Pyke,James Burke,Raymond Baxter and many more.
Science came alive for me listening to them.
The Royal Society Christmas lectures were also high on the list of not to be missed TV.
Am I making sense?
Had one too many tonight.

I still watch the RI Christmas lectures even now.
This is going to sound very lame, but last year my 12 year old nephew was telling me about how much he was enjoying doing Science at "big school" and I suggested he watch them.
He did and he actually texted me to say thanks for putting him onto them.
He now loves all things scientific and loves going to museums and learning about astronomy.
And he thinks my telescope's fantastic, so chew on that!
James Burke's on later by the way.

Newtonian bastard.
Bloody trees and light pollution are a pain in the arse.
Don't have the nerve to shoot the lights out with an air gun like Patrick Moore.
Did you collect the 'Sky at Night' books? Still got all mine.

No, sadly.
I've still got a very battered copy of The Boy's Book of Astronomy by Patrick Moore that was my Dad's in the 60's and I still refer to it now.
I take my telescope on to the golf course near us and set it up every once in a while because it's shit in the back garden for the reasons you cite.
A late night dog walker once called the police (true story) and they came and had a chat.
They even had a look through it and one of them was amazed when I showed him the ISS passing over.
Reading that back, am I weird....?

I once had to explain myself when I took a deckchair down to Wogdin park (near the bandstand) to watch the perseid meteor shower (no girlfriend at the time) and found myself being questioned by a rather suspicious couple of cops.
As I've got older, the idea that sitting outside freezing yer balls off is a pleasurable way to pass the cold winter evenings has become less and less attractive.
Although I did once see a UFO. True story. But I'll save it.

It's the acclimatization hat's the pain in the arse, isn't it?
If you could just set it up and start looking through the bastard, it wouldn't be so bad but you've got to set it up and wait for ages, freezing your teds off and looking like a right sad twat with your flask and other nerdy paraphernalia.
My wife calls me Roy Cropper when I'm using my telescope.
I once replied with "That makes you my male to female transsexual wife then, doesn't it, Hayley?" and she didn't speak to me for a week.
(PM me the UFO story - I'm intrigued.)

Off to bed now,but I will tomorrow.
I was used to looking at the sky,so I wasn't gonna be fooled by Venus.
And nothing man made could behave like the object I saw.
More anon.
