No sign of anyone really norpig. In all honesty the talk about Dawson is probably just that, talk. He'll be sent to whomever his manager thinks will do the lad's prospects most good and with Wigan and several others in the mix that's not likely to be here. Also, the WBA Manager seems set on only loaning him out for ONE month which is just no good to us.Norpig wrote:still no sign of a left back then!

why do clubs wait until the last minute anyway? Makes for good telly but is no good for the nerves or morale. Left back should have been a priority on the 1st January not left till the 31st to possibly try (and probably fail) to get someone in.

How do we know they haven't been trying since the 1st?

they should have been identifying players well before then to ensure we could do business early in January, it just makes no sense to leave it so late, this applies to all teams not just Bolton

Most teams don't want to let players go before they have got in replacements, that's why most business is done later in the window.

Hipster it would have leaked somewhere that we were looking and you know it mate. I remember last Jan 31, Nixon got all hot under the collar on his live blog but as the day wore on it occurred to him and to the people he was chatting to that we really WEREN'T going to do any last day deals, that NOTHING was in the works and that's what I believe is going on here. No hidden negotiations, no "secret" talks, nothing seems to be happening now because nothing is.Hipster_Nebula wrote:How do we know they haven't been trying since the 1st?

We've let Ngog go, signed another underperforming striker on loan to replace him and that's all we'll do between now and Feb 1st in my opinion. I'm actually surprised we did that much. So surprised that I now have a "week off" from here starting Saturday morning.
So just watch, Saturday afternoon will see the announcement that Sheikh Alo da Wonga has bought the club for half a billion quid and to keep UEFA sweet with the FFP regs he's sponsored the stadium for a billion a year for the next ten years, the shirts for a million a match and we're borrowing Messi, Ronaldo, Lewandoski, Rooney and a few others for the rest of this season with a view to permanent buys in the summer. He's gonna sack Dougie and bring in Pep Gardiola as manager with Jose Mourinho as assistant.
Phil Gartside is going to be given a high flying job, strapped to a satellite so he can ensure the sheikh's fifty foot screen in downtown King Khalid City has perfect reception of all our games for his friends and family to enjoy.
Then I'm going to wake up on Sunday morning, realise it was all a dream and

Sorry you've lost me.
Are you suggesting that if you identify targets before Jan 1st that means you will always get them.

Not a chance do we hear of every target the club pursues, and the main reason we have to wait till the end of the window to do our business is because we're reliant on other clubs letting us take their players. Which they won't allow until they have cover. We don't have the finances to make offers that can't be refused.

1874 most of the time it leaks, you know that as well as I do. If we were really in serious talks with anyone it would be on Sky at least. I agree we have to wait till very late to see what we can get because of our finances but that simply reinforces my point. We probably aren't hearing much about us going after people because at the moment we're not doing that. Maybe tomorrow afternoon when pretty much everyone else has done what they wanted we'll start enquiring about players who haven't moved or aren't currently getting a game but it's a big gamble to do things that way, albeit one we have no choice but to take. Just saw another thread here about Liam Trotter from Millwall, he's out of contract in the summer and Holloway may sell but apparently we aren't meeting or close to their asking price. Holloway can possibly afford to stick to his guns and risk the lad going on a free. We can't afford to pay a huge fee for anyone as you said so I don't see how this will come off if it's true. I suspect we'll get the usual "we tried our best but couldn't make it happen" mantra.bwfc1874 wrote:Not a chance do we hear of every target the club pursues, and the main reason we have to wait till the end of the window to do our business is because we're reliant on other clubs letting us take their players. Personally I fear that we've already done all the business we;re going to do this window, we moved out ngog and replaced him with an underperforming striker on loan. That was enough to ensure I have a "week off" from Saturday but I sincerely doubt we'll do any further business. I'm actually a little surprised we did that much.

LPP, serious talks we'd probably hear about yes. But only a minority of enquiries get to that stage. We won't hear about half of the targets the club chases, they want to keep it under wraps Nd quite rightly to stop other clubs coming in.
I just don't think there's any evidence to suggest we haven't been trying to sign players all window, it's only natural for more to be happening now as I explained in my last comment. Whether or not we do is down to finances.

You're right culceth. Should make way for mason to return. I'd rather keep Davies if I'm honest

Hmm, one fit striker for Saturday, unless we sign Mason or somebody else quickly.

Perhaps mate but in all seriousness I don't think a quick phone call or a short e-mail saying "is so and so available at all" really constitutes a pursuit. I'm not saying that's what has happened but we really don't seem to be chasing particularly hard for anyone at this point. Dawson looks to be at best a one month loan deal which clearly is no good to us, McNaughton looks to be going nowhere and Mason, well, I wouldn't want him anyway, especially with our current setup.bwfc1874 wrote:LPP, serious talks we'd probably hear about yes. There's another thread talking about Liam Trotter from Millwall but he's a midfielder and although some competition for places might help wake them up we are apparently "far apart" from them in what we think he's worth even though he's out of contract in the summer. I hope we see some action tomorrow and in the little bit of loan window after that but I seriously doubt we will because we have to leave everything to the very last minute and hope we can tie up deals on the cheap very quickly. Sadly the game doesn't work that way now and I fear we'll see no actual movements in or out until summer now.
