SK I don't know a great deal about RL today so I'll take your word for it but I do know that when the cap came in Wigan paid several players about two hudred quid a week. JJB sports then employed these players as 'consultants' on several hundred more per week. At the time JJB were Wigan's main sponsor and also owned shares in the club. Widnes, St Helens and a few others did something very similar. If the League cracked down on that then fair enough but imo a salary cap wouldn't work in football. If you said it had to be a percentage of turnover then big clubs would still be able to pay way over the odds and snap up all the best players. If you make it a set figure then someone like Aguero wil be a footballer for Man City and a sales consultant for Etihad on the side. I'm also not certain that a salary cap couldn't be challenged in the European Court on the grounds of restriction of trade. I'm not so sure a salary cap would work. It was tried in RL and several clubs got around it by paying let's say Joe Bloggs a few hundred quid a week to play rugby but also paid him several thousand a week as a 'commercial representative' or 'communications assistant' because non playing staff weren't included in the cap system. One player got 200 pounds a week as a player and almost ten thousand a week to be a 'club ambassador'. Big clubs could and certainly would find a way around a direct salary cap as they are already skirting FFP.
Teams have been docked points for breaching the cap and it's now pretty difficult to say with any conviction that there are paper bags present. The cap in Oz and Union is much bigger than Super League, and I'm not convinced some of the owners want it any different!!!

Can't say I'm too gutted. I never expected it to happen anyway. It would have been an impressive bit of persuasion by lennon to get him to take a pay cut and play in the championship.
