Looking back, I'm amazed that none of us lost an eye back then because we thought nothing of splitting into two teams in Smithills woods and spending all day trying to maim one another.

My mum would never let me have one of those, I remember a friend having one when we were kids that had a metal arrow on the top that fired off! Shocked

We used to have guns that fired ball bearings.
It's a wonder any of us grew up with the requisite 2 eyes.

My mum never even suspected that I had a Black Widow, as I kept it well hidden - It would have gone straight in the bin, if she'd known about it. Very Happy

One of our gang graduated from his to an actual compound bow and steel-tipped arrows.

We were like the James Gang - Black Widdows, Gat guns, bows and arrows, various air rifles (.177 & .22), cricket bats and pretty much anything else that could inflict pain and that we could get our hands on.

It really is a miracle that nobody got killed.......

We'd go to the tip and collect lead from window lights, roll 6" of it up into a ball and when fired from a catapult it opened as it flew through the air making a loud whirring noise as it spun before thwacking into the target. Left a cracking welt on flesh.

Not very hi-tech.

You cranked the handle and the track vibrated, moving the horses.

It was dead random but good fun.

And there was one grey which, for some unknown reason, I always used to pick as my horse.

And that's why the adult me made a few bob by betting on Rooster Booster (pre his Cheltenham success.)

"It's a grey - I'm lumping on!"

There is a race just for grey horses. Can't remember where.
A tough one for grey backers.
