Obviously, this thread has gone off topic, so I'll continue the trend. I remember years ago, I was in Cosgrove's gym in Atherton having some physio and there was a boxer in the next room who had just beaten Julius Francis, the boxer was screaming like a girl in the next room having his treatment, it was for an arm injury or something. My young physio was laughing and she said he's always like that.

The heavyweight boxer was called Mike Holden and he was from Manchester.

I'm as soft as shit and couldn't fight my way out of a paper bag! But, I have never been hit in my life. Why?

Because my greatest weapon is a good vocabulary and the ability to reason with people!!

Me too, but I always carry a lighter so I could soon get out of a paper bag. Being able to reason with people is a good skill but sitting around a table and engaging in dialogue doesn't always work. That's why politicians declare war.

karlypants wrote:Police hail successful homophobic chant crackdown at Bolton Wanderers v Brighton

Police have hailed efforts to crack down on homophobic chanting at yesterday's game between Wanderers and Brighton as a success, with just one potential hate-related incident reported.

That incident is still under investigation and police are unable to confirm details at the moment.

Before the game, Bolton Wanderers and the police warned fans not to sing homophobic chants, explaining that anyone who did so would be arrested.

In April last year, the Brighton and Hove Supporters Club and the Gay Football Supporters’ network submitted a dossier detailing homophobic abuse that fans have received.

They reported hearing homophobic songs at both home and away games against Bolton on November 24, 2012 and March 9, 2013.

Police therefore believed that the Brighton fixture would be a suitable game to highlight the campaign and stewards and officers handed out cards to both sets of fans about reporting hate crime.

There was also an advert in the match-day programme, detailing the club’s support for police action against homophobic offences and PC Rob Smith, Bolton’s football co-ordination officer for Greater Manchester Police believes the methods worked.

He said: “It was a very well observed game and everyone behaved themselves, apart from the one potential incident that is still under investigation.

“The police and the club did everything possible to get the message out there that those type of chants would not be tolerated and we are very happy with the result.”

There was not such a good result for the Whites, who lost two nil to the seagulls on the day, but despite the loss, fans gave their backing to the campain.

Chris Samways, aged 17, from Chorley said: “I think it is the right thing to do because that sort of abuse is not right, it could be the only way to stop serious abuse.”

Simon Nightingale, aged 41, from Ainsworth added: “I agree, if they are doing homophobic abuse then lock them up — its a game of football at the end of the day and yes there is banter but when it comes to issues of race or sexuality, there is just no need for it.”

The measures were also welcomed by Brighton fan Angela Corr, aged 51, she said: “We get this kind of abuse wherever we go. My son is gay and I think there is a need for people giving out the abuse to realise it is wrong — perhaps arresting them is the only way of doing that.”

The Police have every right to laud the magnificent success of operation GAYBOY, this will surely go down in the annuls of policing history, WELL DONE!!!!!!

Just a slight criticism, its probably me just being picky but, wouldn't all of the expenditure, publicity, organisation, and resources been better used on something different, you know, like, catching criminals!!!!!!!, just sayin!!!!!

Just in case the stereotype of Brighton fans all being chutney ferrets wasn't being perpetuated quite enough by making a massive drama out of the whole situation, the one Brighton fan they choose to interview turns out to have a gay son.

Who presumably also supports Brighton......

And is a gay........

Quality.

I agree with Simon. There's no place for the rape
of homosexuals inside football stadia.

Just a quick reply to Scott I was OK at best and when Mike Tyson landed in the Uk and eventually Manchesterhe needed a stable of sparring partners. As I was about the same height as Julian Francis ,weight etc ,we got paid good money to do something I would have done for free.Mike used to like wearing the big 16oz gloves as they build strength and stamina as you hone in for a fight where you wear the lighter 10 oz gloves so your arms are feeling quicker, stronger. We were allowed to wear the 10oz but even with them on his footwork and speed was amazing .It was a pleasure to get a good whack or two.The 16oz don't hurt too much and you have head gear. The guy was already prepared,we were just there to probably keep him in training in between the publicity stuff. As it happened he knocked Julian Francis down 5 times before the fight was stopped in the 2nd rnd.Something I'm proud off being in the Ring with one of the Greatest Heavyweights ever.I don't like talking about it too much unless asked but he was a really nice guy.We all got tickets good ones as well at the MEN Arena, pity it lasted as long as a virgins first fuck.

Wasn't Julius Francis a nightclub doorman?

I'm sure he probably was but he did win the Lonsdale belt outright and he was 35 when he fought Tyson so although he got panned he did take some good scalps in his time I'm pretty sure of that.Probably got a good payday.I would of got in the ring for about 1/2 million quid 2 rounds.Early in the 2nd as well I recall.

Did you ever come across Michael Murray from Manchester? He was a decent heavyweight who died at 50 of a brain tumour. A decent bloke by all accounts and a quality fighter on his day.
