It doesn't though.
Iirc correctly it is years since the winning party at the elections had the majority of the votes cast (pre WWII I think it was).
We've even had partys forming governments (because they won most seats) even the they had less of the total vote cast than the party that came runner up.
As a Lib Dem, I've no need to tell you that seats won by them compared to votes cast nationally for your party is miniscule compared to what Labour and Conservatives get - hence your obvious desire for Proportional Representation.
Even at the last election, no one actually voted for a coalition government!
I'm not actually knocking the system, it's as fair and practical as any I know, but the nation actually seldom gets what it as voted for as a whole.
In reality about two thirds of the seats won't change hands and in those that do, about two thirds of the voters vote for the same party as they did in previous elections. That is why political partys carefully target the 'floating voters' in a small minority of seats, as their votes can more or less determine which party will be the overall winner.
Of course this may be the election that changes all that but I think the vast majority of people (maybe Scotland may be an exception) will vote the way they have always done.
The very best of luck to you for Thursday but I think a win is out of the question. I do hope all your hard work though is rewarded further down the line with a more winable seat to contest in future.
