Neil Lennon says Bolton’s first victory of the new season has been coming for some time, after registering three points against Wolves at Macron Stadium.

Zach Clough’s penalty proved to be the decisive goal, after he stepped up to convert from 12 yards after Wellington Silva had been hacked down in the area.

Prior to that Liam Feeney had fired Bolton ahead, whilst Wolves did halve the deficit midway through the second period through a penalty of their own.

“That has been coming,” the manager said in his post-match press conference. “It was tough out there today, particularly after Wolves got the goal. I felt we could have put the game to bed on the counter attack. We missed a couple of good chances.

“It could have been a more comfortable afternoon then it was, but we’re of course happy with the points.

“I thought the Wolves penalty was pretty soft. There didn’t seem to be much contact at all. The psychology of the game changed on that moment, when Wolves pulled one back. That said, we coped with what they threw at us pretty well.

“It took real bottle for Zach to go up there at a crucial stage of the game and stick the penalty away. Hopefully that’ll spark his season. He looked a lot more like himself. He’s a class player and in the end he’s won the game for us.

“Gary Madine worked tirelessly up front too. There’s no doubt that he has made us a better side and that we create a lot more chances when he is in the team. He just needs to keep doing what he is doing and the goals will come his way.

“You can’t help but feel a bit of relief. It has been a long time in coming, but we have been playing well and creating a lot of chances.

“We probably didn’t play as well as we have at times this season, but we’ve won.”
