I can't find any confirmation on this although if true I could see him doing a good job for us.rogercpc wrote:Victor Anichebe, new striker!

Iles says a striker is a done deal, not confirming its Anichebe though.
He's one of those that id have hated us to sign in the prem, but (providing he stays fit) would be decent in the Championship.

Emnes I can understand as he would bring the pace and movement we so desperately need. But Anichebe?
Why oh why oh why oh why you may ask?
So Neil doesn't have to change the goddamn system.

Slow down Lusty! You've been waiting for a reason to really lay into Lennon since he joined, this isn't it. There's absolutely no reason why the system currently being used wouldn't work with a better quality target man up there. That doesn't mean long ball, it means using the pace and trickery of Wellington/Clayton/Feeney to get in behind teams with a focal point for them to play off and in to.
What would you change the system to with Emnes (who by the way is one of the worst finishers I've ever seen)?

Some of you are all wrapped up about pace..... what we need is somebody who does not panic in front of goal, that's in the right place at the right time.....that's a goal finisher/poacher.....along the Klasnic type if you will. Plenty of top strikers can't run past a traffic bollard......to name some...Dennis Law, Gert Muller, Messi, Rooney, John Byram, Frankie Worthington

Yes...but that's another discussion.....Messi beats people with sheer skill on the ball....it looks like they are standing still but its not pace. Now take a Theo Walcott ...that's all pace...he blows by people...but often does nowt with it after that. Pace is not the do all end all....IMO.

Agree with your point but Messi's an awful choice of example.

All moot now anyway as the Emnes and Anichebe deals both not happening according to Iles:

But then you've got to bear in mind that he does talk absolute shite most of the time......

Aye....maybe not the best example
Although I was watching him the other night and you'd be surprised at how many times he actually stops dead with the ball. He then waits for the defender to put the tackle in and away he goes.... how bout Berbatov ....never broke a sweat but a grand striker....better example?

Au contraire 74! I have always been a fan of Lennon, even in his playing days and desperately want him to succeed.
I also have a bigger appreciation of the scale of the task than many fans who want this player or that when it's not do-able so fully accept that he has to work with the resources available to him.
However he has had a playing system in mind since pre-season and refuses to change it even when it patently isn't working and in my book that's pig-headedness - which is a huge disappointment to me. Worse still, a few contradictions are starting to appear e.g. saying to the media that our young strikers are "nowhere near ready" for first team action as they aren't physically mature enough yet - and yet he picked the diminutive Clough without hesitation.
Fact is they aren't physically mature enough to batter their way through in the Heskey/Madine style, but if they can be quick, find space and get their shots off I don't think physical maturity is so much an issue.
That said, I'd love it if he manages to turn things around but in my experience if you do what you always did, you get what you always got - and with the signing of Anichebe it looks like Neil is going to stick to his guns.

Looks like we'll be getting a new striker - probably Igor - so I can't see Neil changing the system any time soon, especially with Madine finally getting on the scoresheet. The new lad will have to get a game as will Madine so it's probable Clayton will make way despite a good effort yesterday.
It could be enough to get us out of trouble goals-wise and if so, Neil can perhaps turn his attention elsewhere. For example, if Pisano keeps his place he needs to find a better way of working the line with Feeney who I still have doubts about especially if he's asked to play more as an orthodox wide man. TBH if we had a decent wide right player with Da Silva on the left, overlapping wingbacks who can actually cross and TWO goal scorers I think we could be a proper threat - if, and only if, everything turns out as hoped for.
