Report: Bolton 0-1 Birmingham City

IN BRIEF

Wanderers suffered their first home league defeat of the season after being beaten 1-0 by Birmingham City on Tuesday evening.

Former Bolton defender Paul Robinson opened the scoring for the visitors in the 21st minute of the clash, nodding home a free-kick at the far post.

Wanderers did have a number of penalty shouts turned down throughout the duration of the clash while Gary Madine and Darren Pratley saw efforts cleared off the line, but they couldn’t breach the Blues’ rear-guard and were left empty handed at the final whistle.

TEAM NEWS

Emile Heskey returned to the starting XI for Wanderers, while there was a place on the bench for Under-21s striker Kaiyne Woolery.

For the opposition meanwhile, former Bolton defender Paul Robinson lined up against his previous employers under the floodlights at Macron Stadium.

FIRST HALF

Birmingham were the team in the ascendancy as the game got underway, with Wanderers forced onto the back foot inside the opening stages.

Ben Amos wasn’t being troubled inbetween the sticks though, with Bolton restricted the majority of the Blues’ play to the middle of the park.

It was Wanderers who enjoyed the first real chance of the game in the 11th minute, with Wellington Silva seeing his effort ripple the side netting after taking a deflection on its way through.

Darren Pratley came close to opening his account for the season soon after, but the midfielder’s scooped effort narrowly flew over the crossbar with Tomasz Kuszczak flailing.

Out of nowhere however, the visitors snatched the lead in the 20th minute through former Wanderer Paul Robinson who rose highest at the far post to nod a free-kick home past Amos.

A harsh goal on Bolton who had seen more goalmouth action than their opponents inside the opening quarter of the clash, Birmingham continued to press after their opener in a bid to extend their lead although Wanderers were standing firm.

With ten minutes of the half to go, Feeney tried his luck after collecting a loose ball in the area, only to sting the palms of Kuszczak with Macron Stadium already rising to its feet, while Heskey saw a header at the far post from a Jose Manuel Casado free-kick nicked away at the death.

The Bolton faithful were on their feet yet again moments later after Wellington was seemingly muscled off the ball in the box, but the Brazilian was booked for simulation.

Leaving the field with an injury shortly after, the winger was replaced with Max Clayton.

Wanderers tried to pull themselves level before the half time whistle and with four minutes of additional time indicated they powered forward after good link-up play between Mark Davies and Pratley, but it ultimately came to nothing as the Whites went in at the break a goal behind.

SECOND HALF

With no changes at the break, the game got back underway with Andrew Shinnie coming close to doubling Birmingham’s advantage, only to be denied at close range by the imposing figure of Amos.

Gary Madine then enjoyed a chance from a corner-kick with the frontman rising highest in the box to nod the ball goalwards, but his effort flew just over the bar to his dismay.

Buoyed by their early opportunity, Bolton continued to push and were almost rewarded in the 56th minute as both Madine and Pratley had shots cleared off the line in quick succession in a crowded penalty area.

Having escaped, Birmingham almost had a second with Shinnie and Clayton Donaldson forcing two smart saves out of Amos at range.

Madine then had a penalty shout of his own as he was apparently fouled in the box by Michael Morrison, only for the referee to wave away his claims.

Frustration was evident for the Whites, but they continued to press in search of an equalising goal and in a bid for extra fire power, threw Woolery into the mix in place of Heskey for his home debut with 15 minutes to go.

With ten minutes of the game remaining, Birmingham found some space in Bolton’s third of the pitch but their efforts ultimately proved fruitless as Wanderers stood firm in defence.

Bolton themselves threw men forward in their numbers as the clock ran down and when four minutes of additional time were indicated, it was a case of all hands to the pump.

Madine enjoyed a glorious chance on the stroke of the 90 after finding the ball at his feet, only to put his effort wide under pressure from his marker.

Wanderers won a free-kick deep into stoppage time for a foul on Davies and it was a packed penalty area for the delivery, but it was in vain as Birmingham held out for the victory.

A disgrace,a shambles. Impotent and lacking in skill from back to front. Thank God for Amos or it might have been 5 or 6. This really can't go on or we'll be too far gone by Christmas.
Lennon seemed clueless as to what to do to change things- it was the same hopeless tactics from start to finish.
It wasn't helped by a total amateur of a referee. Birmingham were fitter faster - a class above us in every department Even that exWanderer and lump of lard Robinson was a better player than anything we could offer.
On that showing Lennon has got to be worried. When Leeds beat us on Saturday (which they will if we play like that) then he should really think long and hard about whether he can get us out of this.
On tonight showing there is no evidence that he can.

Very worried, I haven't got a clue how we could change things to improve our situation and it seems that the management doesn't either.

This team is too good to be bottom of the league  (not by much) but we shouldn't be playing this poorly. Looking like Lennons lack of experience is coming through, he's never had to deal with losing week in week out.

Lose against Leeds and it's time for yet another change.

I thought it was an alright match for a 0-1. I don't think we deserved to lose at all, unfortunately the defence let us down once again at a crucial stage when we were playing with a bit of confidence.
Not sure how much of it had to do with Birmingham's defence, but we looked a lot more dangerous going forward than we have in most matches to date. Not much of a statement admittedly.

The biggest annoyance of the night (apart from the referee obviously) for me was Dervite. Absolutely pathetic defender, and even worse at everything else.

As for the referee, you keep thinking they can't get any worse and they just do.

only just got back and i wonder why i bother after tonight. I can accept a lack of quality as we all know the team is poor but there was no energy and a distinct lack of effort tonight.

We created hardly anything especially the second half when you would have thought they would pull out all the stops to at least get an equaliser but we were flat the whole game.

As for Madine and Heskey together? Both were poor and won nothing in the air all night. Also if you are playing 2 big men you would at least expect the wingers to put in a few crosses? Feeney can't cross to save his life and Silva won't even attempt it as he cuts in all the time.

Thoroughly pissed off tonight, too good to go down? i think not. we are in big trouble.

Seeing Madine and Heskey play together is like a short throwback to when we had Kevin Davies up there with David N'Gog.
Just everything that doesn't fill you with belief when you're one nil down, or any other time for that matter.
OK they've both got their strengths but it's been years since we had somebody up there with a half decent touch and a bit of pace and composure.

As said, Vela, Prince and Clayton on the bench. It surely has to be a massive change and even getting young  Samizadeh to show if they can cut it. It seems rather pointless to play the same bods week in week out and still plummeting to the lower echelons. Let's see if the young 'uns can turn things around. Or are we keeping them purely for hopeful selling at a later date?

One of the worst performances in many a year, almost Freedman-like in it's crapness.

There is absolutely no hope when you're starting with Heskey and Madine in attack. Shame on Lennon and the sooner he packs his bags the better.

have to agree with Nat about the performance and the selection. I've just read the latest article on the BN website and it sounds like even Lennon has thrown in the towel now.

I just don't get why Lennon won't change the (obviously failing) system and create real competition for places so that the entire squad has a chance of selection if they work for it. Surely the system should not be cast in stone but should be adapted to get the most out of the players who are in form? - who should then be selected.

I'll be really disappointed if he walks or is sacked before he at least tries something different.

These people in charge of the whole shebang - are they deliberately trying to put everyone off from coming to games so they can just shut everything down?

Case in point - arriving in the ground none of the TV monitors on the concourse are switched on. Is this just a penny-pinching operation designed to save money on the leccy bill - or maybe they don't want you to see the starting line-up in advance in case you can't handle the sheer excitement of it?

A working TV might have been able to impart some information about the proposed tribute to the young lad who died of cancer. If I'd known what was going on I would have joined in.

Then there's the game itself. Jesus. Soul destroying is the phrase that comes to mind - up there with the very worst. Abysmal team selection, lack of passion, brainless players, sheer technical incompetence etc. etc. etc.

I hope I'm not subjected to the sight of old man Heskey running out on to the pitch at the start of a game again - it's way too embarrassing.

Time to shit or get off the pot, Lennon!

Numpty i totally agree with you, the thing that annoys me is what do we do in training all week? I can tell you what we don't do and that's practice passing, we couldn't string 3 or 4 passes together last night, we really are poor in possession.
