'Riot' at a WAG wedding: Footballer's £40,000 fairytale day 'turns into mass brawl at stately home'

  • £40,000 wedding of Danny Guthrie descended into violence last weekend
  • Guests reportedly threw lobster thermidor at lakeside reception
  • Police called at 2.25am and 4.50am by staff and were called A THIRD time the day after following a disturbance on bus leaving the property
  • Bride said to have gone to hospital following claims she was punched
  • Allerton Castle in Yorkshire was once owned by Grand Old Duke Of York

Staff at Allerton Castle, an estate near Harrogate, Yorks, described the chaos as 'more Big Fat Gypsy Wedding than our usual clientele,' and said those attending had 'behaved like peasants with money.'

Police were called twice on the morning of June 2nd as violence erupted during the disco at the nuptials of player Guthrie, 25, and his Liverpudlian girlfriend Rebecca Middleman, mother of their three year old daughter Sienna.

Guthrie had been released by Newcastle United on the day of the wedding.

The castle is one of England's premier wedding venues and was once owned by Prince Frederick - The Grand Old Duke Of York - brother of King George 1V.

Sources said fighting broke out around 2am in a marquee on the lakeside.

It was reported that bride, Rebecca, 23, was punched in the face during the melee and had to go to hospital for checks the following morning.

Police broke up the first fracas but then at 4am - after staff at the Castle had locked out the guests - police were called again by the frightened managers when a man allegedly kicked and smashed down the door to gain entry.

Yesterday, in an apparent reference to the incident, Guthrie suggested the incident had been blown out of proportion.

John and Jan Cook, managers at Allerton Castle, which is run by the Rolphe Foundation, a charitable trust, confirmed the police were called to two disturbances but said they could not comment. Mr Cook said:"We have been advised by the Trust not to say anything."

But sources close to the wedding venue said everyone had been left 'shocked and disgusted' by the behaviour of guests.

"To say they behaved like peasants with money is an understatement," the sources said. "They were obnoxious and disgusting. One could say it would be expected of a rough pub on a council estate, but then that's probably unfair to council estates. It was more Big Fat Gypsy Wedding than our usual clientele."

The wedding took place at 4pm on Friday June 1st in the Grand Hall at the Castle and the guests left for the marquee around 6pm.

The source added:"Thankfully, they were well away from the Castle itself. The Foundation has spent untold thousands in renovation, the damage could have been enormous."

it was claimed things started getting out of hand during the wedding feast, prepared by Michelin starred caterers Dine, held in the marquee at the reputed £40,000 wedding. "They were chucking the lobster thermidor about. How can you comprehend such behaviour?" a source said.

"Mr and Mrs Cook, who live on site, were called by marquee staff at 2am to say there was trouble, and the police had been called, and not to expect anyone staying for the night. The Castle has three en-suite rooms and a bridal suite for immediate family but other guests stay at hotels nearby.

"Mr Cooke gave it until 3-30am then locked the doors. At 4am they were awoken by the sound of someone breaking in. The police were again called, by the Cooks, Mrs Cook was terrified. Other guests, presumably the respective families, arrived. We allowed them to stay the night, and they left in the morning. There was, thankfully, no further incident.

"But we have not had so much as a phone call or letter of apology for this disgraceful and upsetting behaviour. Everything was dealt with properly here, it was about the guests and not the venue in any way.

"We have yet to assess the full damage."

Another said:"Staff at the marquee had to remove candelabra from the tables in case of a fire risk. There were people staggering around drunk and some were sprawled out over the tables."

Allerton Castle has been the location for many film and television productions including: The Secret Garden; Sherlock Holmes – The Sign of Four; Till We Meet Again; Room At The Bottom; Fairytale: A True Story; Diamond Geezer; Location, Location, Location; Lost in Austen and a Bollywood film ‘1920’.

A spokeswoman for the police said:"North Yorkshire Police were called at 2.25am on the morning of 2 June to reports of a fight among a group of guests at Allerton Castle, Allerton Park near Knaresborough. On arrival, the guests were dispersing and leaving the venue and no complaints were received from any victims. No arrests were made.

"Police received a further call at 4.50am when a group of people began banging on doors and causing a disturbance. On arrival, police found a number of guests had been locked out and were trying to get back in. No crimes were reported and no arrests were made."

Families of both the bride and groom have denied the incident took place.

Sounds like a good do.

At least the bride will remember the day for the rest of her life.

It sounds like a great do.

I once attended a wedding up in the north east, of a lad I went to sixth form college with. As dawn broke the 'survivors', about 15 of us, ran around naked in the grounds of the country estate and danced around a maypole. Fuck it.

After having read this to my missus, who has zero interest in football, I can report her thoughts on the matter.

"Total scum!"

Admittedly she is biased having a long standing dislike of Scousers in general but still, I'm inclined to concur.
But then what's a wedding without a punch up?

To be fair a £40k wedding is nothing flash by a footballers standards so fair play to Guthrie. I nearly got married in 2004 and that wedding would have cost my father a lot more than £40k, and I was born in Little Lever.
