Two great releases for us old hippies out there: the first two Country Joe & the Fish albums. Electric Music for the Mind and Body is already out and I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die will be out in September. The recordings have been remastered and you now get both the original mono and stereo mixes and a 32 page booklet.
Not sure why anybody needs both the mono and stereo mixes but these albums bring back fond memories for me. I bought their first album at the same time as the first Captain Beefheart album.

I've got the first album miles,it's one of my all time faves. I haven't heard "Fixin' To Die" for years. Like you I can't see the point of having a stereo and mono version of the same album but If the cost isn't too prohibitive I may well purchase the second album on it's release.

I'm going to have to have a listen at them two albums boys. Not been on my radar before. It's great when you find some new stuff you like even if it is over forty years old! I remember listening to Son House a few years ago for the first time and more recently Bo Diddeley with a keen ear and how much I now like that stuff.
Magoo should like Fixin seeing as he gets a mention!!

Just played the Cream reunion concert DVDs. Brings back memories - of the original not the reunion concert, the tickets were a ridiculous price.
Never could see the point of long drum solos though. The best drum solo ever was a short one (just under a minute) on a Spirit album called The Family That Plays Together. The track is called It's All The Same if anyone is interested.

Pretty basic to say the least xmiles, perhaps that's where Zappa got his inspiration for The Clap on Chungas Revenge?! Mr Skin must be clocking on now?
I agree with you about drum solos though but as an exception Neil Peart always makes them entertaining IMO.

Very basic but nice and simple and staying with the tune. Sadly Ed Cassidy died last December.Soul Kitchen wrote:Pretty basic to say the least xmiles, perhaps that's where Zappa got his inspiration for The Clap on Chungas Revenge?! Mr Skin must be clocking on now?

I do remember seeing Jon Hiseman (Colosseum) do a decent quite long drum solo once, but most live drum solos are just boring.

Xmiles, found out today that multi instrumentalist George Duke died on the fifth of this month age 67. I know he played a lot of stuff withZappa and worked with Miles Davis as you no doubt know.

Yes, probably my favourite George Duke recording is a live one he made with Billy Cobham - Live On Tour In Europe. I can only take a little humour in music which is why I have such mixed feelings about Zappa. I love his guitar playing and the instrumental music but the humourous lyrics mostly leave me cold.

Hadn't heard about George Duke until reading this. RIP George. "The Nancy and Mary Music" is what I always think about whenever I think about George Duke. On Zappa, FZ has given me more pleasure from music than any other artist ever, full stop. But that pleasure is almost entirely restricted to the output of the old original Mothers. Uncle Meat, Burnt Weeny, Weasels, Absolutely Free, Only in it for The Money and all the other old stuff is just sheer genius. The Kaylan/Volman era was ok and a good laugh but the later stuff when it basically descended into pornographic nursery rhymes I really couldn't give a sh1t about.

HP Nancy and Mary Music was a great instrumental with GD doing his "vocal" drums.
I know were you're coming from with the latter comment, Apostrophe and Joe's Garage are great musically and the former features loads of George Duke, he started getting a bit silly on Overnite Sensation but no doubt the poster Dinah Mo Hum may think otherwise.
He had that much conflict and anger towards authority that he didn't give a shit, odd really cos Neil Young who thought Zappa was a weirdo, shared much the same anger and still does.

Actually, thinking about it, there are a few other later Zappa items that I did like. Apostrophe,as you say, is good. I love Waka Jawaka and have only recently discovered that I really like Grand Wazoo. One Size Fits All is excellent and Zoot Allures is quite good as well.
Did you ever see him live SK. I saw him once, at a one day outdoor affair at the Oval Cricket Ground in London in about 1973/4 I think, where he played with the Grand Wazoo Orchestra. There were a few other groups on as well(the only one of which I can remember was the welsh group Man). I find it really strange that given the extent to which I absolutely worshipped Zappa at that time I can't remember a single thing about it. God, it's no fun getting old is it?

HP had tickets to go and see him in 71 till that twat decided to push him off stage!! That's as close as I got for whatever reason. One of my lifetime musical regrets, as not seeing LZ.
As for Man saw them at the BIT about 72. Had some good up and coming bands on there on Saturday night, saw Hawkwind, Arthur Brown, Wishbone Ash, Curved Air there to name but a few.
Seen FZ's lad at the Bridgewater and he's over again soon I believe. He's a great musician in his own right, with a great band, it would be good to see him do some of his own stuff and see how he develops.
As for senior moments, I try to use them to my advantage!

I think I saw Zappa at Hammersmith Odeon but I can't be sure. Whilst googling it I found out that there was a 3 CD album released in 2010 featuring recordings from his 1978 gigs at Hammersmith. It's already out of print although Amazon have it for £94.13!
I definitely remember seeing Man and Wishbone Ash several times but who knows where and when exactly.
SK I would appreciate some tips on using senior moments to my advantage.

Xmiles, business first. If you see somebody you know but forget their name I say sorry having a senior moment, whats your name, half way through the conversation. That way you have got well into the conversation, had pleasantrys and not made anybody you are speaking think you are a right cnut. You can excuse youself but use the senior moment words! This scenario can be adapted to various situations at work or play and generally gets a smile, particularly if the recipient is younger than you. It has become a bit of a trademark for me lol.
Seen Ash at FTH a couple of times, Bickershaw, BIT, and Albert Halls in town. Does this ring any bells?
