The Thing remake was abysmal IMO.

utterly banal, didn't think much of the original either so i suppose i was on a hiding to nothing with that one!

Do you mean the remake I was talking about? there has been 3 versions.

I was referring to John Carpenter's The Thing (1982), which was a remake of an older version, the newest remake does look shite and im not going to watch it

I'll be honest i didn't know Carpenters was a remake, so you've got me there.

I meant the newest one was abysmal and i thought Carpenters was a bit dull.

I still think Halloween is my favourite horror of all time though, and Carpenters lastest "the ward" got a bad rap but i actually enjoyed it. The man knows how to create suspense for sure.

A Nightmare On Elm Street is my favourite horror film, the remake was bloody awful.

Moving on slightly from remakes to reboots....

why bother with reboots, i.e. where they start the franchise stories from the beginning again? why not just carry on the franchise but with a different actor - works well for James Bons.

Batman been rebooted about 3 times

Spiderman is now rebooted

why? why? why? I never watch a so-called "rebooted" franchise

I agree about the Reboots unless there is a completely new vision for the franchise.

I like the Batman reboots, they've gone against the high camp, gothic Tim Burton films.

i hate seeing reboots that just make the same film again, like Spiderman, Superman, The Hulk, etc etc etc.

Lofty_Love wrote:There are good remakes, the reason they are never credited as good remakes is because the first film was generally not very good/popular so most people don't realise it was a remake in the first place.

Three that come to mind straight away are John Carpenter's The Thing, The Fly, (Both wich are often/always in top sci-fi movie lists) and Scarface, all three are generally not known to be remakes.

Unfortunelty too often films which were very successful and loved are remade just to gain more money since there is no chance of creating a better film, usually due to individuality of the first, i.e. The Italian Job

Good post and true.

I didn't know Scarface was a remake, but the storyline seems somewhat different from what I've read of the original.

Just watched the remake of Get Carter with Stallone and yes it is terrible. It has some truly awful direction with irritatingly flashy camera work and jumpy editing. The ending is changed for the worse and there is the embarrassment of seeing Michael Caine (playing Brumby)on the receiving end of a paraphrased "You're a big man but you're in bad shape ..." speech from Stallone.

What's the point of re-making a classic like Get Carter - you won't do it better so why bother? Saw in the schedules they're showing Blues Brothers 2000 tonight and that's another turkey. Blues Brothers without John Belushi is like re-making King Kong without the monkey.
