Fourteen people have been killed and 50 injured in a shooting at a cinema near the US city of Denver, police say.

A man wearing a gas mask opened fire after tossing a tear gas canister at a midnight showing of the new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, in Aurora.

A 24-year-old man was arrested in a car park nearby in possession of a rifle, handgun and knife. One other gun was recovered from the theatre.

The suspect told police explosives had been stored at his home.

Police chief Dan Oates told reporters that an apartment block in the north of Aurora had been evacuated as they investigated that information.

The gunman was named as James Holmes, by FBI and Department of Homeland Security sources.

The right to bear arms has cost thousands of lives in America. It really is about time they amended their constitution.

After Hungerford our government went a bit OTT but these incidents are so frequent in America that they really do need to look at this outdated piece of legislation.

for the record I own a gun but its kept in a gun club and I only shoot targets with it - I enjoy shooting. I get annoyed with the level of documentation I have to keep up to date just so i can keep it safely locked in an armoury in a gun club and only use it there...

but when this happens... I kind of like the fact that firearms are controlled in this country.

I dont shoot live prey anyway so I have no need to take it out.

Biggie... come on, change it to something that at least reflects the severity of what's gone on.

oh its been changed now... the 'joker' reference has been removed.

It's rare for them to actually catch the shooter in these situations, I believe this time he did get shot but not fatally.

I thought it was bad when I put it - definitely too soon.

I hate things like this happening and I always can't get over how surreal it must have felt to be in there when he burst through the doors with guns and just shot people on the spot - no questions asked - just BAM - dead.

And many more may yet die. I feel really sorry for the poor families involved. Another needless tragedy that could have happened to anyone in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I do hope that it does not spill into a copycat style thing where some sickos will think it was cool and attempt to replicate it at other batman showings...

Will they start increasing security at films?

Also, and I have no way of knowing if this is simply a rumour, but I heard that he did it because someone ruined the batman film for him by telling him what happens - sounds stupid I know, but some people with guns are even stupider.
