Thats the rumour coming from Nixon, though i read it as Gartside offered him the option of carrying on alongside Sammy Lee, but Davies stepped in and put an end to it.

I read it as Eddie just stepping in and putting his foot down, as a fan, rather than as a back-seat driver in his own club!
