The government is attempting to push through plans to monitor all web traffic including email, phone calls, messagaes etc...

What will it mean for you if it goes through?

The plans in the draft bill include:

Internet service providers having to store for a year all details of online communication in the UK - such as the time, duration, originator and recipient of a communication and the location of the device from which it was made.

They would also be having to store for the first time all Britons' web browsing history and details of messages sent on social media, webmail, voice calls over the internet and gaming, in addition to emails and phone calls.

Police not having to seek permission to access details of these communications, if investigating a crime.

Police having to get a warrant from the home secretary to be able to see the actual content of any messages.

Four bodies having access to data: the police, the Serious and Organised Crime Agency, the intelligence agencies and HM Revenue and Customs.

Is it a step too far or do you have nothing to worry about if you don't do anything wrong?

I have no problem with it. I have nothing to hide. If it helps prevent terrorism or crime I don't see how anyone can be against it.

Of course its a step too far.

I can appreciate the police sometimes needing access to an individuals web usage data IF the police have reason to believe that a crime has been committed and having access to the data will assist with their investigations. however, what the hell happened to 'innocent until proven guilty'?

This is just the authorities assuming that everybody is guilty of a crime - surely or good friends at the European court of human rights can do something useful and step in - between trying to help foreign terrorists and paedophiles live a life of luxury at the expense of the taxpayer... obviously.

HMRC are involved for one reason and one reason only - to protect the government's kitty and make sure everybody is crippled to the maximum paying for Cameron and the rest of his etonian buddies to spend on more shit.

I dont want to see my county become a totalitarian policed state, George Orwell was right.

The police aren't interested in your gay porn fetish Rebel, they just want to track terrorists and major crime.

I don't see what 'innocent until proven guilty' has to do with any of this, they're not suggesting people will be put away without a trial.

What I do in my own home is no other fuckers business, provided its not illegal.

if your happy with this invasion of your privacy, would you be happy with the following?

> The police walking in to your house 'just in case' you have a cannabis farm in the west wing?

> The police coming to inspect your knickers drawer 'just in case' you have a stash of drugs in there.

> The police dragging you in for a full invasive strip search 'just in case' you have a condom full of heroin up your arse?

> HMRC demanding to see all your accounts and bank statements 'just in case' your committing fraud?

I think, if it goes through, it will be the first of many steps in a very dangerous direction. North Korea style like Hipster said.

The first three are physical invasions of my privacy, never going to happen without a warrant and it's a brave government that tries to introduce any of those.

The HMRC can already demand to see everything and I'm fine with that. If everyone paid the right amount of tax we probably wouldn't be in this financial mess.

Obviously they are hypothetical situations nat.

but it still stands that they are as much an invasion of privacy as watching you browse the web is.

Its no different from the police walking in my house catching me wanking over pictures of Susan Boyle or them knowing im looking at pictures of Susan Boyle and wanking... is it?

its still an invasion of privacy - my phone calls, texts, emails and web history are just as important to my privacy as my front door and curtains are...

It's basically a police state.

Anyone who thinks differently is just naive.

It's not quite a police state, but I look forward to when it is. Our current legal system is too heavily biased towards the criminal.

I don't really have a problem with it being used in policing, the police already track keywords used in people searches. The government could already find out pretty much everything about you if they wanted, even sites like youtube and facebook know your shopping habits and search patterns..

However the issue is that when government bodies can't even be trusted to keep the information confidential as they have show many times in the past through lost reports and releasing the wrong information then I do worry about the security of millions of peoples personal details being held by some company.

The whole 'police state' thing is nonsense and just spurred by the huge anti-police mentality in this country, your not going to get arrested for doing nothing, having the police monitor your details for 'dangerous looking words' is no different than having the police monitor the street for 'dangerous looking people', there are two worlds now, the real and virtual, and they both have to be policed.

Its not a police state its just advancement in technology.

I have been visited by Greater Manchester Police because a certain person made some allegations about me. Next time I'll probably get an ASBO or something.
