Petrov signs for Espanyol - RELEASED

MARTIN Petrov is on the verge of quitting the Reebok to sign for Spanish side Espanyol.

The Bulgarian winger, who was signed on a free transfer from Manchester City in 2010, is understood to have flown out to Spain for talks and should complete the deal with the La Liga club in the next 24 hours.

The club have declined to comment, but sources suggest no transfer fee will be involved.

To be fair he is on top wages but I suspect he is not happy at not having a regular place in the squad.

How much do you expect to get for someone who will be 34 soon?? And how is it his fault if the club let him go, they obviously want him off the wage bill it suits all parties for him to leave on a free rather than paying his contract off.

I suspect there's more to this than we know. Petrov has looked pretty good when he's come on as sub - yet Dougie hasn't given him a fair chance. Sounds like another manager we used to have.

Having him off the wage bill is like getting a transfer fee. Sorry to see him go, but I totally understand why A) the club want him gone (wages) and B) why he wants to go (not playing atm).

I third this anger management plan

his face hasn't fitted under DF so its not a surprise to see him leave. A good player on his day but they have been few and far between for me.

I think people overrate Petrov's final ball. People think his crossing is second to none and that with a top striker in the middle we'd be a real force because of it. I don't agree.
That said, at worst, his pace is an asset. He inspires dangerous attacks on the opposition.

Either way, it's irrelevant since he's clearly never featured in Dougie's super plan.
