It made me cringe last series for instance when Natasha said "We went with Lad's Mag as our USP!"
The fact that it was a lad's mag isn't even an SP, let alone a unique one.
This really pisses me off!
You're right, doffcocker. USP is a commonly misused term. People use it when they mean 'differential'. I have a few pet hates like this.
- when people use 'infer' in place of 'imply' - you can infer that I mean something, you can't infer in the first place.
- when people use 'literally' in a figure of speech ie 'this team is literally on fire today' - I don't think so. Common in sports commentary.
- when people use 'refute' instead of 'deny'. 'Refute' means to categorically prove an allegation wrong, not to deny it. Common in news reports.
- when people use 'less' instead of 'fewer'. This one is very common. ie at the supermarket you see signs which say 'eight items or less'. This should say 'eight items or fewer'. You should only use 'less' when you are dealing with a non-countable noun such as furniture or equipment.
I also hate the word 'basically' and the term 'at the end of the day'. Common whenever a stupid person is asked their opinion on something, ie Question Time, radio phone-ins.
