No, not entitled.

Look at things in a simplistic way.

If you are self employed and you do better than you did last year, you earn more.  If you didn't, you earn less.

You don't earn less and somehow get given a cost of living rise by the Government or the local council, or the people you've done businesss with.

Move it up a step - you are now a business and you employ people - and the intention is you make a profit.  If your business makes enough, then of course you make sure your staff don't leave by not treating them fairly and part of treating them fairly is to try to ensure they are not worse off year after year because they work for you - so you pay a cost of living rise to them

But what if your business runs at a loss?  You can't pay what you don't have, so maybe people will understand if it becomes a choice of trying to keep the business going rather than pay more to the workers simply because the cost of living as gone up.

Finally you get to the public sector (of which I worked in for 30 years).

If your employer, the Government (or the local council - which is basically funded by the government anyway) is doing ok, then a cost of living rise would be fair and be expected of then - but what happens if the government is going through a bad time - surely people shouldn't come to expect a cost of living rise as a right - private sector employees don't.

If the private sector is doing badly then they don't get a cost of living increases - so if the Government is doing badly - then neither should the public sector either.

A very simple explanation I know but still a fair and reasonable one I think.

Its only money anyway, seriously, would a 1% pay rise make you happy?

Its either here nor there, i'd rather the government not give anyone a pay-rise, put it in the NHS or build a couple of Apache helicopters .
