I worked at Loaded for 4 weeks back in '96ish. I went in on a freelance gig with them purely as a spy for the company I was working for. Our company had just launched Maxim and it was shit so I was planted to get in on their editorial meetings to see how they came up with their content ideas.

To my surprise everyone on staff was really well educated and hilarious which made it effortless for them. They did nothing but drink (and other naughty things) for 3 weeks of the month and then literally threw it together, night and day, for the last week of production.

When I reported back that they came up with all their ideas intoxicated in the pub, I was told to keep quiet and not tell anyone on the Maxim staff because we wouldn't be doing it that way. Maxim remained boring.

I'm reading The Rape of Nanking. It's miserable - I don't know why I do it to myself.

Yes that is one very disturbing book with all too many examples of man's inhumanity to other people.

If you "enjoy" this kind of stuff there have recently been some books published about the Armenian genocide committed by the Turks during World War I.

I've just re-read the whole Adrian Mole series. Fantastic books.

Not a massive Rebus fan and I like detective stories.

All a bit dour for me.

Same as Stuart McBride.

Miserable, dark Scots the pair of them

Cheers. Might have a go at him after Christmas.

'Go Set A Watchman' is still unopened. Don't think I'll ever read it.

I had a feeling you wouldn't read it, mate.

Some things are best left the way they are.

That's why I've never watched the Get Carter remake with Stallone.

Sacrilege!

Read every one of them-and they're a good read if you like police procedurals.
Try the Lewis trilogy by Peter May -they're even better than Rankin. Also try Belinda Bauer -a young English writer with a fantastic ability to capture conversations. They're all based in the West Country around Exmoor
But like all series- you must read them in the order they were written, as the characters develop novel by novel

Thanks for that rammy. Some names that are new to me there.

I'll seek them out.

Have you read any Henning Mankell?

The Wallender bloke?

They're quite good.

And Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole series isn't bad but you've got to do 'em in order.

I've read virtually all the Wallender books- again a good read.
Here's three more names;
Mons Kallentoft- brilliant detective stories
Andrew Pepper-19th century crime novels. Great stories with lots of twists in them.
Robert Galbraith (who's actually JK Rowling ) with her series of crime novels. Quite complex books but all the better for that

But as Bredders says- read them in order as there are sometimes flashbacks to previous novels with all three writers
