Dean Holdsworth's Sport Shield Investment Group edges ahead in three horse race for ownershipThe winner of the boardroom battle at Wanderers should be revealed by Monday.
In what has boiled down to a three-horse race, Dean Holdsworth’s Sports Shield Investment group appears to have the edge over two rival bids looking to buy the club from Eddie Davies.
A consortium led by ex-Wanderers midfielder Stelios and another from the Middle East have also been negotiating heavily in the last couple of days, with each being asked to provide indisputable proof they can cover the club financially during the due diligence process.
Davies is in a hurry for the preferred bidder to complete the next stage, which would see all accounts and legal documents opened up for examination. After that, and provided there were no further hitches, the formal sale would be announced – with the hope of a new owner being installed by Christmas.
At least one of the groups is expected to be in the director’s box for today’s game against Cardiff City.
Wanderers are sailing close to the wind financially but money put down by the preferred bidder should mean the playing staff will receive their November wages and that close to 300 staff around the club’s various site will be able to breathe a little easier in the run up to the festive period knowing the threat of administration has been staved off.
Though there are signs that worst could be over in the takeover struggle, on the pitch Neil Lennon’s side have plenty of work to do.
The Whites remain cut adrift in the bottom three and have won just once all season but the manager remains adamant that his side can still turn a corner.
“We are a different prospect at home and I genuinely believe we are not playing that badly,” he told The Bolton News. “I keep telling the players they have to believe in themselves that this is going to change. No-one will hand it to them.”
The wave of unity which has spread around the club over the last week will most likely make a strong atmosphere against Cardiff – and the club moved to help boost numbers by offering free upgrades to any ticket which is likely to be un-used this afternoon.
