did anyone used to go to the Tavern at Hunger Hill on a Sunday night? It was always crawling with fit women and you could hardly get to the bar but we went every week hoping to cop off.

Please tell me you're not posting from the pub.
I'm currently in the crown and anchor facing Harvey Nichols (that place you enjoy shopping in!) enjoying a pint of diamond lager :p

I go in the tavern every now and again, it's nice and cosy in there in winter with the sofas and fire and a good pint.

I usually go drinking in the 3 pigeons on a Friday night just before Barton grange. Smile

In my younger days we had a routine on a Friday night. Remember..back then pubs stopped serving at 10.30pm apart from Friday night and Saturday night when they stayed open till 11pm. Our first port of call was the Pineapple then it was the Craven Heifer followed by the Tramways then down to the Bowling Green and lastly Pomps. Having reached the bottom of Blackburn Road and five pints to the good we would go in the New Inn then the Black Dog and finish the night in the Lamb just before last orders. My grandfather lived round the corner on Draycott street back then and I used to stay the night.

I can't remember whose beer Colin Joynson sold in the New Inn but The Black Dog and the Lamb were Greenall Whitley's.

The Bowling Green on Blackburn Road was a decent Tetley pub. The landlord was called Les and his missus did a splendid rendition of the Chattanooga Choo Choo. He retired to Blackpool and I bumped into him working at Blackpool Tower.

The Black Dog was the hotbed of darts. The landlord was Jim ' Scarface ' Hunter and his wife was Peggy. They were superb mine hosts. Friday and Saturday nights were darts nights and anyone could enter for a quid in a straight best of three 501 knockout.

Many quality Lancashire county players used to enter and the prizemoney for the winner could be as much as £45 which was a few bob back then.

Bit late to the Halliwell / Blackburn Road pubs chat but hope this helps.

I'm from the bottom end of Halliwell Road so I know them all well - so let see how my memory holds up.

The three local pubs to me on Halliwell Road were the Lamb (Greenhalls pub iirc?), The Belle Vue and The Darby (or was it Derby) that changed its name to Sharmans.

There were two pubs lower down Halliwell Road, The Black Dog (big darts pub) and The New Inn.

All these pubs funnily enough were on the same side of Halliwell Road.

The Spinners and the Portland were the two nearest pubs to me on the south side of the Halliwell Road area.

As people have said, on Blackburn Road there were two pubs - facing each other - with more or less identical names.  The locals referred to them as Pomps and Isherwoods - from the name of their landlords from years gone by - Pomps short for something like Pomphrey's or something like that.

There was a big pub at the bottom of Blackburn Road that I can remember but shut down before I had a chance to have a drink in there - I can't however remember the name of it - Commercial possibly?

Inbetween Halliwell and Blackburn Road was a small pub called something like The Bolton Tavern, which was on Bolton Street.

A long time ago now - but what happy days they were - had more than a pint or two in most of them with my dear old dad.  God rest his soul.

When you're out in town with your wife/girlfriend and you're posting on a football forum you know your life is meaningless.

Kill yourself, it really is your only option.

I agree Norpig. Wasn't the Crofters the big pub just in front of Bolton Infirmary? If so I had a few pints in there as well. The landlord was called Wally. The last time I passed it I'm sure it had become an Asian restaurant.

Yes! Moghuls palace which shut down and had an issue with Bolton council as they ripped the bar out when refurbishing and it was apparently a listed building?

Another pub I've just remembered which wasn't far from the Crofters was the Cotton Tree near Skagen Court. I bet that has gone now as well.

Funnily enough, the bowling green I saw today although it has been shut for a good few years appears to be having a renovation from what I saw this morning.

Doubt it will be a pub again though!

Pretty much spot on there Sluffy. I couldn't remember the name of the next pub down from the Lamb but you are spot on with the Belle Vue. Another one near there was the Lord Raglan, another darts hotbed.

I'm sure I can remember going into a pub called the Cricketers Arms as well but for the life of me I can't remember where it was.

It's done well to survive. I noticed the Cattle Market is all boarded up.
