I'm hearing things like...

* It's just banter
* He's talented
* It's the way he is i.e. a bit eccentric
* That's the problem with the PC brigade
* The show is popular and cutting it will cost the BBC a fortune

Last time I heard that defence it was when former BBC colleagues were justifying why they didn't do anything about their concerns over Jimmy Savile in the 70s and 80s - after all, Jimmy was  a popular banter merchant with a high-earning show and was equally "eccentric". Because of this very argument they did nothing.

This has turned into a debate where people's opinions are being based on their feelings towards political correctness and/or opinion of Clarkson - not about whether celebrities should or should not be exempt from breaking the law (if proven)

These people supporting Clarkson are supporting the very approach/attitude to the law that allowed Savile to continue to molest children for another 30 years. Ignorant bastards the lot of them.

He's above the law anyway isn't he? At least he is in his own mind.

The Savile analogy is a good one. (I actually said the same thing to Mrs B this morning in the car when we were listening to it.)

Clarkson, like Savile, believes he is indispensable at the BBC because he makes them big bucks - TG is shown and syndicated all over the world and I believe it's the flagship show on BBC 'Murica, so he feels safe enough to keep doing what the fuck he wants, knowing that there's very little chance that they'll pot him.

But there has to come a point when enough's enough, surely?

And the original Stig (Perry Something) made me laugh (and cringe) with his laughable comments about what a great bloke Jezzer is and how motor racing is a man's world and giving someone a slap is perfectly ok in his view.....

Angling for a new job on TG when the BBC flog it (and Clarkson) to Sky by any chance, Perry....?

I just listened to the 1 o'clock News on BBC. The first 10 minutes were about Clarkson.
WTF!! Its a nothing story about a TV presenter who twatted someone and got suspended.
Is that really the most important story in the UK/World today.
Personally I couldn't give a monkeys if he never returns to the screen I'm utterly indifferent about him.
But does this  completely minor event deserve to be the most important news event in the UK today?

Very good, Wanderlust. Totally agree. Rich celebs like JC and J Ross should be setting an example. I'll never forget JC's imbecilic rant on The One Show, for which he should have been immediately sacked.

You leave Jesus out of this, Okocha.

Whittam will have you for that.

(And before I get zapped, that was an innocent wordplay gag based on Okocha referring to Clarkson as "JC" - a well known epithet for Jesus and the Whittam character's staunch "pro-religion" stance on here in the past - nothing more, please don't disappear me. Thanks. (Not as much fun when you have to explain everything....)

I'll never understand why so many people worship at the altar of pot-bellied Clarkson and his dopey crew. The BBC rake in billions of pounds in licence fees every year so these so-called "celebrities" can spend their time going on jollies round the world acting like spoiled twats.

He's an embarrassment to his gender - a bloated throw-back who still thinks it's all about driving big fast macho cars around and probably still gets off every night on his stash of 70's Playboy mags.

The box is crammed with all these freeloader types travelling the world at everybody else's expense - the worst for it are all those arseholes in aprons who've been "blessed" with the ability to boil a pan of peas or chuck a couple of haddock into a frying pan. That's brilliant, mate, well done, now would you like to fly over to Brazil, Indonesia & Australia and and let us film you doing exactly the same thing over there!

Because I find it funny? And I don't even have an interest in cars. But thanks for telling me what I should enjoy.

The BBC will back down, there's no doubt about it.

Ironically, Clarkson is being portrayed as being something of a revolutionary sticking two fingers up at the establishment - something that resounds with the small-minded UKIP - voting insecure.

One day, they'll realise that Clarkson IS the establishment and is no more "revolutionary" than his myriad scriptwriters tell him to be.
