Even when he is asked to stop he can't help himself he simply has to have the last word. It is like arguing with a small child.

Telegraph and others reporting it’s been leaked that the first tax rise will be in the form of scrapping the tax thresholds to raise a quick £6 billion. Tough on pensioners and low income earners. The budget will be interesting as the Tories historically won’t raise the basic rate of income tax as it’s not a vote winner but prefer stealth tax like this so we’ll see what else sunak will include.

What's the world coming to? How will Gordon Taylor, Gary Lineker, Dale Vince and Marcus Rashford make ends meet? Poor old Chunky will have to pay a TV licence as well.wanderlust wrote:Telegraph and others reporting it’s been leaked that the first tax rise will be in the form of scrapping the tax thresholds to raise a quick £6 billion. Ergh, this is depressing:
https://www.theguardian.com/inequality/2021/feb/25/job-losses-in-pandemic-due-to-performance-issues-say-nearly-half-of-britons
Most concerningly: 'One in eight Britons think lower earnings and higher unemployment among black people are due to a lack of motivation or willpower'
This attitude was held by more than one in five of the Conservative voters polled, compared with less than one in 20 Labour supporters. Overall, 47% said those inequalities are because of discrimination but strikingly racist views remain, with 4% of respondents saying inequality was because most black people have “less in-born ability to learn”. The researchers discovered this by asking questions rarely posed in the UK, but often included in US social surveys.

They aren't scrapping the current Personal Allowance tax thresholds.wanderlust wrote:Telegraph and others reporting it’s been leaked that the first tax rise will be in the form of scrapping the tax thresholds to raise a quick £6 billion. "Take control of our borders," they said. Then 6 cases of the p1 variant bred in Brazil are found in the UK.
So when is this thorough control going to start? Too little, too late......again!

Asked the missus to take control of her borders, but she absolutely refuses to have a Brazilian.

Some people need reinforcement of the overall picture, especially when new details like these arise.
If you don't like poiltics, don't read the threads which clearly will contain relevant views....or put forward your own.
Otherwise let's all try to remain on good terms.

Looking forward to Sunak’s budget - it will be interesting.
It’s presumably way too early for him to be allowed to lay out his taxation strategy which will probably happen mid-term - late enough to be distanced from Brexit and early enough to get it accepted before the next general election - so the likelihood is he’ll continue to hand out a few crumbs of comfort in politically sensitive areas and at some point try to look serious whilst forewarning us that his borrowing will have to be recouped at some point.
He may be the first Tory Chancellor in memory to increase corporation tax from 19% to the low twenties despite posturing about supporting economic recovery but that would only bring in around £12 billion a year - and so far he’s borrowed an unprecedented £270 billion - so the bad news will have to wait.
My guess would be that he’ll stick with the populist low budget crumbs - extending the furlough scheme, the stamp duty holiday, business rates, low VAT for the hospitality industry that isn’t operating etc for now.
The corner he has painted himself into is that the Tory manifesto promised not to increase the big tax items i.e. those that affect voters directly. He is unlikely to do it yet, but maybe there will be some suggestion in the budget that at some stage the government will be prepared to increase NI, income tax and VAT?
How else can they get the economy back on track having run up such massive debt?

Exactly as expected - a few sweeties for the faithful who still believe Britain is sitting on a goldmine of untapped potential and the debt issue and underlying societal issues kicked down the road until a more politically expedient time. Lots of old ideas recycled and repackaged which will make a fortune for consultants like my missus. Perhaps I shouldn't be persuading her to retire just yet?

Interesting that the “I” newspaper leads with “Budget 2021: Highest taxes since the 1960s” today given that it’s now owned by the Daily Fail group chaired by Rothermere - a Tory supporter. In addition to a fairly damning financial analysis of the budget there is an article about how the measures are likely to widen the poverty gap.
Daily Fail group have also just acquired the New Scientist.

The "i" newspaper claims to be politically neutral, publishing articles on all shades of political opinion.
It remained neutral on Brexit and in the 2017 General Election.

Today’s offering from Rodriguez taught me a new word - odalisk - which was my LOI. I think I might get one if the missus agrees, or moreover doesn’t find out.
