Well the racists who voted for brexit are in for a treat. What this means in reality is that there will be fewer Europeans entering the UK but more people from southern Asia and many of them will be Muslims.

So Joe finally got around to calling Johnson (Trump fan) Merkel (Trump hater - the handshake incident) and Macron (Trump hater - he pulled out of the Paris agreement and the Iran deal) Would have loved to have listened in to those chats.

Immigration bill is interesting inasmuch that it clears the way for an Aussie-style points system - although that will more likely based on e.g. can you pick carrots as opposed to do you have a doctorate in chemistry. No details available as they haven't even handed out the £80 million consultancy to design the questionnaire yet.

Should we be even remotely surprised at this piece of news which clearly shows the Tories' underhand tricks....especially when "Honest Bob" Jenrick is involved?

I've had Bob on "ignore" for a while now. Distasteful views, attitudes and language!
Are we allowed to put Mods on "ignore" as well? Smile

He won't as he's already cited the PAC as being the benchmark in his opinion.
He may come back with the rather tired "he's not breaking the law" trope again though (AKA the Ken Anderson defence in chess circles)
However this should be in the cronyism thread as the funding was directed at Tory election targets and parallels their activities in handing out contracts and appointments (on which note there's another Cummings flunkey getting a new job today) I believe it's a new job in the Ministry of Public Mind Control.

He is another Gammon. Like the one who tried to grill me about left-wing bias on the Bus this week.

Edit - this post is in the wrong thread. I meant to post it in the Trump thread.
Ignore this post as wrong thead. I shall relocate it.

When I say about another Gammon, I am on about Trump.

The rift in the Tory party seems to be gathering pace with the "resignation" of Lee Cain and the further loosening of Vote Leave's grip on the Government. Carrie Symonds appears to be leading the charge away from the confrontational and disruptive style of government espoused by Cummings and his dwindling cronies towards a more recognisably traditional conservative style and there is even talk in Tory circles that the evil alien himself might go.
I'm not holding out any hope that it will happen though, but if the Vote Leave yes men he ushered into senior positions continue to lose their posts he might eventually find his own position untenable.
All of which is highly ironic as Brexit itself is due to start in 7 weeks time, borrowing has spiralled out of control, international relations are in the balance and there's a pandemic to deal with. In a way, I'd like Cummings to still be around when the shit hits the fan despite treason no longer being a capital offence. Life imprisonment will just have to do.

Is there only me who thought it was funny that the Boris's Director of Communications is someone called Lee Cain (leakin' - get it!)

Must be just me then!

Also why has the PM's girlfriend got such a big say in his advisors?

Isn't that a bit like when Neil Lennon's bit on the side was picking our starting eleven?

It all seems a bit surreal to me.

So, who would Boris prefer as his "bride"....Carrie or Dominic?

Both partners evidently further examples of Boris' poor judgement in important affairs?

With Brexit becoming a reality in a few weeks time I thought I'd look back to remind myself of the promises that won the referendum back in 2016. If we are asking "how is the Tory Government doing?"  - a government that was itself elected on the promise to deliver these promises - I reckon they've scored 2 and a half* out of 19 so far. How would you score them?
(1) More money for the NHS
Vote Leave’s battle bus said: “We send the EU £350 million a week. Let’s fund our NHS instead”
“Instead of sending £350 million per week to Brussels, we will spend it on our priorities like the NHS and education.” – Vote Leave briefing
“After we Vote Leave on 23 June, the Government should use some of the billions saved from leaving the EU to give at least a £100 million per week cash transfusion to the NHS.” – Michael Gove, Boris Johnson, and Gisela Stuart
(2) More money for farmers
“The UK government will continue to give farmers and the environment as much support – or perhaps even more – as they get now.” – George Eustice, Minister for Farming, Food and Marine Environment
(3) More money for scientists
“If we Vote Leave, we will be able to increase funding to science and still save billions” –Vote Leave
NB: We are losing over £1 billion a year in EU funding for the sciences.
(4) More money in your pocket
“Wages will be higher for working people outside the EU… because pay will no longer be undercut by uncontrolled migration.” – Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, and Gisela Stuart
(5) And scrapping VAT on fuel bills and tampons
“In 1993, VAT on household energy bills was imposed… When we Vote Leave, we will be able to scrap this unfair and damaging tax.” – Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, and Gisela Stuart
‘After we Vote Leave… We will need a carefully managed negotiation process and some major legislative changes before 2020, including taking real steps… to abolish VAT on fuel and tampons” – Chris Grayling
* In the budget, a promise was made to finally scrap the 5% tampon tax on Jan 1st 2021 however the vast majority of tampons used in the UK are manufactured in Spain, the USA and Slovenia so are likely to attract import duty of 15% or more - so unless Sunak decides to waive import duty, the actual cost will rise rather than fall. In the balance this one hence the generous half point.
VAT remains on fuel bills. And FYI it's already 2020 Chris.
(6) No EU beneficiaries left worse-off
“There is more than enough money to ensure that those who now get funding from the EU – including universities, scientists, family farmers, regional funds, cultural organisations and others – will continue to do so… We will continue to fund EU programmes in the UK until 2020” – Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, and Priti Patel (amongst other signatories)
(7) And no short-term economic disruption
“After we Vote Leave, there won’t be a sudden change that disrupts the economy.” – Boris Johnson, Gisela Stuart and Michael Gove
8 We’ll get brand new trade deals all over the world
“We would immediately be able to start negotiating new trade deals… which could enter into force immediately after the UK leaves the EU” – Chris Grayling
(9) There’ll be no damage to trade with the EU
“There is a European free trade zone from Iceland to the Russian border and we will be part of it… Britain will have access to the Single Market after we vote leave… The idea that our trade will suffer because we stop imposing terrible rules such as the Clinical Trial Directive is silly.” Vote Leave
(10) Or our cooperation with the EU
“We will negotiate a UK-EU Treaty that enables us 1) to continue cooperating in many areas just as now (e.g. maritime surveillance), 2) to deepen cooperation in some areas (e.g. scientific collaborations and counter-terrorism)” – Vote Leave
(11) Guaranteed in a treaty which we’ll sort out before 2020
“It will be possible to negotiate a new settlement with the EU, including a UK-EU free trade deal, by the next general election in May 2020” – Vote Leave
(12) Which won’t have any obligation to follow EU laws
“The supremacy of EU law and the jurisdiction of the European Court over the UK will come to an end” Vote Leave
(13) We’ll cut immigration
“I wouldn’t set a time limit for it but the ambition would be to bring it down to tens of thousands.” – Michael Gove
(14) With a new system in place by 2020
“By the next general election, we will create a genuine Australian-style points based immigration system.” – Michael Gove, Boris Johnson, Priti Patel and Gisela Stuart
(15) That doesn’t favour EU citizens
“Those seeking entry for work or study should be admitted on the basis of their skills without discrimination on the ground of nationality.” – Michael Gove, Boris Johnson, Priti Patel and Gisela Stuart
“[We will introduce a bill to] end the automatic right of all EU citizens to enter the UK by the next election” – Vote Leave
(16) But which gives Irish citizens total free access
“The right of Irish citizens to enter, reside and work in the UK is already enshrined in our law. This will be entirely unaffected by a vote to leave on 23 June.” – Michael Gove, Boris Johnson, Priti Patel and Gisela Stuart
(17) And stronger border controls
“There is one absolutely clear-cut dividend from leaving the EU. That is our ability to regain control of our borders, including far stronger powers over who we can deport, and proper preventative checks at the border.” – Dominic Raab
(18) But no controls on the Northern Irish land border with the EU
“There will be no change to the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic.” – Michael Gove, Boris Johnson, Priti Patel and Gisela Stuart
(19) And the union with Scotland will be stronger than ever
“If we vote to leave then I think the union will be stronger…  I think when we vote to leave it will be clear that having voted to leave one union the last thing people in Scotland wanted to do is to break up another.” – Michael Gove

Interesting. Great research!
Which two and a half do you think they've fulfilled, Lusty?

They announced the points-based immigration system the other week and although net immigration has remained at the same level for the last 5 years theoretically an Australian-style system will eventually lead to an overall reduction in immigration depending on how it's managed. It'll be interesting to see how they apply it to the European seasonal workers on whom we depend.
1 point.
They've also managed a trade deal with Japan although it's arguably worse than the one we had with Japan in the EU. I know this doesn't replace the 45 excellent EU trade deals we have enjoyed over the last 40 years but I thought I'd give them half a point for the barefaced cheek of it.
The tampon tax is in the balance hence a half. They did promise to scrap the VAT - they just didn't mention import duty.
And there's another half for dumping the ECJ although that's also in the balance depending on how much UK is forced to concede.
Obviously if we walk away without a deal that will become a point - but the NHS, the farmers, the fishermen, the scientists, manufacturers, exporters, businesses in general and every household in the UK will be far worse off than we were in 2016 so it will ensure all the other promises will never be fulfilled.

It's unbelievable how often Blundering Boris manages to mess up......it's almost daily!

The worst was when he managed to get Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe's sentence in Iran doubled, but this is almost as bad:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-54965593

Constant need to apologise or back down.

The man's a liability who thinks that a few metaphors, allusions to Greek or Roman history/mythology and that perennial smirk will be an adequate substitute for statesmanlike, carefully considered words.

Also:- stands too close to a minister with Covid; and does not initially back the new USA covid-beating drug so that we are now at the back of the queue to get adequate supplies. All in a day's work, Boris!

Whilst Boris may be a joke, it's no joke that they are talking about No Deal again. No it's not hardline negotiation or posturing - the time for that has long passed - now they are talking about it because of the simple fact that if the Tories are not going to renege on their promises to Leave voters they simply won't get a deal - and it's almost as if after years of negotiation and countless warnings, they have just realised it.
Whilst other countries don't have a deal with the EU yet - including Australia, Canada and the USA - they all have something we don't - loads and loads of targeted sector - specific deals in place that supercede WTO rules in the main sectors they trade in - so the alternative isn't a "Canada style" or "Australian style" deal because we have NOTHING.
And given that we get more than half of our imports from the EU and sell around 43% of our exports to the EU we are presenting our international competitors in a global market with an open goal - the perfect chance to eliminate the UK as an economic force in the world.
Sad to see what we have built over hundreds of years sacrificed - and for what?
